HOPKINS VS. JONES II FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
BERNARD HOPKINS
“I don’t want to look like a bully on Saturday night. I want him to bring his ‘A Game.’
“I will knock this guy out. It is going to be up to Merkerson whether he lives or dies. (To Merkerson) It is going to be up to you to stop it!”
“It’s personal. It’s definitely personal. I’m in the fight business which is the hurt business.
“This weekend is a holiday weekend and I want to give Roy a gift that I think he deserves. (Gives Jones an Easter Basket). He has been running like a rabbit for 17 years and I was looking for a rooster, but all I found was these chickens and he is chicken.
“He didn’t want to fight me because after 1993 I got better, but he didn’t.
“This victory will be one of the top three fights in my career.
“Roy Jones is a desperate man. A desperate man is a dangerous man.
“I helped start his legacy and I’ll be the one to end it.
“Time flies when you’re having fun. It’s not like I’ve been sitting around for the past 17 years. I’ve had 21 title defenses.
“Somebody’s going to be out of character. One of us will have to be. If I want to knock him out, which I do, I will have to be out of character.”
ROY JONES JR.
“I guess he is what they call my ‘rival.’ I don’t like it, but it is what it is. Saturday I am going to clear that up.
“I have it all mapped out. I am the best I have ever been.
“He can’t stand me, he can’t beat me, and he can’t do anything about me.
“Giving me the bunny was dumb, because what idiot as old as he is and still believes in the Easter Bunny?
“This is going to be vintage Roy Jones. I feel the best I have felt in a long time. In past fights I have felt like I over trained. This fight I feel just right.
“Roy Jones Jr. ready as ever!” |
|
NAAZIM RICHARDSON, Hopkins’ Trainer
“I would like to thank everyone for coming out. As a trainer, this is a premier position. You want to be involved in fights like this. Two of the top pound-for-pound guys in the last couple of years matching up head-to-head.
“Bernard is a consummate professional. You don’t have to babysit Bernard.
“I guarantee the Roy Jones Jr. you are going to see Saturday is not the one you saw against Tarver, Johnson or Green. This is going to be the very best Roy Jones Jr. you’ve seen in years. I am confident of that and that is the Roy Jones Jr. we prepared for.”
ALTON MERKERSON, Jones’ Trainer
“It’s always a pleasure to come to Las Vegas. It feels like home. This fight should have taken place years ago, but unfortunately it didn’t. All of the hype all of the expectations are going to come to a head this Saturday night. There are a lot of people who have been undermining these great athletes, but don’t have to worry because Saturday night is going to be a great fight.”
ROY JONES SR.
“I did not come here to talk. I am not here to talk. (Shakes hands with Bernard Hopkins). Don’t take it personal.”
RICHARD SCHAEFER, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions
“Seventeen years has come down to three days. Three days more and then you are going to see these two guys in the ring again. They are legends. The most recognized fighters of our generation.
“I was down in Florida last week for Bernard’s open media workout. I saw something different. I personally have never seen Bernard Hopkins as intense, so prepared, and so ready as he is for this fight and I know this is the same for Roy Jones Jr.
“They deserve the right to fight each other again. Make sure you are going to be here, fight fans and media to see this legendary showdown between these two fighters.
“You snooze you lose. This fight is only going to be available on Saturday night live in the arena and live on pay-per-view. No replays. You watch it on Saturday night or you don’t watch it at all. I don’t want to hear complaints ‘I waited 17 years and now I missed it’. This fight is only being shown once.” |
|
JOHN WIRT, CEO of Square Ring, Inc.
“I’m excited to be here this is going to be a historic fight. It has taken 17 years to get this fight done. We are particularly proud to be involved with the MGM Mirage. This is going to be distributed on closed circuit in bars and restaurants, movie theaters and in hundreds of countries around the world.” # # #

QUEZADA, DALLAS, JR. AND RUIZ HEADLINE AT TACHI PALACE APRIL 8TH
Los Angeles, CA (March 31, 2010) – As Dorothy Gale, the lead character in “The Wizard of Oz,” proclaimed, “There’s No Place Like Home.” Perhaps with that in mind, boxing promoter Dan Goossen revealed in a recent media conference call that Goossen Tutor Promotions will be aggressively promoting Central Valley fighters for its 2010 shows at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, CA.
“This year, our focus for the Tachi fans will be homegrown talent, fighting for worldwide recognition and eventually world championships,” Goossen pointed out. “With the growth of certain local fighters, we will look to promote their next level fights right here at Tachi’s outdoor arena to accommodate the added attendance and attention.”
Goossen Tutor will present the first of its four scheduled shows in 2010 on Thursday, April 8 featuring three of its top young prospects from Central California in Wasco heavyweight Manny “El Toro” Quezada, undefeated Bakersfield junior welterweight Michael “Silent Assassin” Dallas, Jr. and the pro debut of Fresno super bantamweight Michael Ruiz. A fourth locally raised product – Hanford’s Shawn Estrada – was scheduled to be featured on the show but unfortunately, the snake-bitten 2008 U.S. Olympian reinjured his hand preparing for his bout and was forced to withdraw but promised to be ringside to watch his stablemates.
The Tachi home cooking has been awfully good to Quezada (29-4, 18 KOs). The WBC CABOFE Champion and #8-ranked WBC world contender has won 16 of 17 bouts fought there – including a one-sided decision against Nicolai Firtha in a title defense in his last ring action back in October — and has become a true fan favorite.
Quezada will kick off his 2010 competition against veteran Jason “the Sensation” Gavern (18-7-3, 8 KOs). A Virginia native now living in Kissimmee, his two best performances were against Travis Walker – with an eight-round draw who was 10-0 at the time and a six-round, unanimous decision win over 17-2 Raphael Butler. In his last two outings, Gavern has lost to undefeated Russian world contender Denis Boytsov (27-0, 22 KOs and ranked #5 IBF/WBAWBO and #6 WBC) and, most recently, Neven Pajkic (10-0, 5 KOs) of Bosnia by decision.
“We’re excited about this year. It’s gonna be a big one for all of us including Tachi,” Quezada offered. “I’ve had most of my fights there, so I’m excited to get back and get it on again starting with Jason Gavern. I’ve seen Gavern fight and he does exactly that, comes to fight. It’s exactly the type of challenge I need.”
It is Dan Goossen’s plan to continue Quezada’s development at Tachi and get him a world heavyweight title shot – possibly there – later this year.
Also no stranger to the fans in Lemoore is Dallas, Jr. (12-0-1, 3 KOs). The Jackie Kallen-managed rising star pitched a near shutout in decisioning Sergio Joel De La Torre back in October to make it six for six in front of his home area fans. He looked most impressive in a first-round TKO win over veteran Fabian Luque in Temecula, CA in his last bout earlier this month seen on ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights.” Dallas, Jr., who has gained valuable experience sparring with the great champion Manny Pacquiao, will look to take another step in his progression up the junior welterweight ranks on April 8 at Tachi.
“I have a lot of fans and family in the local area who come to Tachi to see me perform,” Dallas said. “I’m going to go out there and put on a good show.”
The appearance of Ruiz on the card is an unexpected bonus for fans at Tachi, as the 20-year old boxer out of Aleman Boxing in Fresno – a semi-finalist in the 2008 U.S. Future Stars national Championship and National Golden Gloves – was expected to be a member of the U.S. Boxing Team in the 2012 Olympics. Instead, Ruiz decided now was the time to turn professional and he will make his debut in a 4-round bout.
“I am very excited to having my first pro fight at Tachi,” Ruiz said. “I will have lots of friends and family coming from Fresno to watch me take the first step in my career toward an eventual world championship.”
Two other undefeated boxers are slated to see action in scheduled four-round bouts on the April 8 show at Tachi, including Ephraim Martinez (3-0, 1 KO, Buttonwillow, CA) versus Juan Topoz (3-2-1, Santa Rosa, CA) in a junior featherweight contest; and Tyrell Hendrix (4-0-1, 2 KOs, Hollywood, CA) against an opponent to be announced in a clash of super welterweights.
Dan Goossen concluded: “You’re normally lucky if you have the ability to showcase one local fighter and try to build them up to stardom. So in this case, to have three locals fighting in front of hometown fans hopefully on their way to world championships, it’s a great feeling for everybody. Mark my words, the Central Valley and Tachi are going to become synonymous with big time local fighters!”
Tickets for the April 8 event – priced at $225, $60, $40, $35 and $20 – may be ordered online at www.tickets.com; by phone at 1-800-277-2255 or at the Tachi Palace Gift Shop, 17225 Jersey Avenue, Lemoore, CA 93245.
CARLOS VELASQUEZ FACES NEW FOE IRA TERRY DUE TO INJURY SUSTAINED BY ALEJANDRO PEREZ
|
GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS PROSPECTS HECTOR SANCHEZ, DEONTAY WILDER AND MIKE PEREZ COMPLETE APRIL 2 SHOBOX EVENT AT HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO IN LAS VEGAS |
|
LAS VEGAS, March 31 – A hand injury sustained by Alejandro Perez has forced a change in opponent for featherweight standout Carlos Velasquez who will now face Ira Terry in the co-featured attraction on the April 2 edition of ShoBox: The New Generation, live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Rounding out the show will be a trio of Golden Boy Promotions’ brightest young stars returning to action, with Hector Sanchez, Deontay Wilder and Mike Perez looking to keep their unbeaten records intact in pivotal bouts on the undercard.
In the main event of the evening, undefeated rising star Erislandy Lara puts his perfect record on the line against the always-dangerous Danny “Dynamite” Perez in the 10-round main event.
The doubleheader will headline an exciting night of professional boxing presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate which will air live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
Tickets, priced at $100, $60 and $30, plus a limited number of $125 VIP and $25 standing room tickets, are on sale now and may be purchased at the Hard Rock Hotel Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, online at www.Ticketmaster.com or by phone at 800-745-3000.
Memphis, Tennessee’s Ira Terry (24-2, 14 KO’s) is currently riding a three-fight winning streak with two victories coming by knockout and, with 26 professional bouts under his belt, he is looking to give the up-and-coming Velasquez trouble on April 2. The ShoBox co-featured bout is scheduled for eight rounds in the junior lightweight division.
Unbeaten in 18 pro bouts, Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico’s Hector Sanchez (18-0, 8 KO’s) gets back into the ring for the first time since his April 2009 win over former world champion DeMarcus Corley and promises that he will be taking no prisoners when he squares off with the always tough Los Angeles native Cleotis Pendarvis (10-2-1, 3 KO’s) in an eight round welterweight contest.
2008 U.S. Olympic Heavyweight Bronze Medalist Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (8-0, 8 KO’s) makes his first start of 2010 Friday night against Ty Cobb (7-1, 6 KO’s) from Wichita Falls, Texas. Though his heavyweight bout is scheduled for six rounds, with seven first round knockouts on his record already, it’s safe to assume that the 24-year-old from Tuscaloosa, Alabama will be looking to end things early. Standing in the way of another Wilder knockout win will be the equally powerful Cobb, the son of former heavyweight contender and Hollywood personality Randall “Tex” Cobb.
Fresh off of a 2009 campaign that saw him win four bouts, Newark, New Jersey’s Mike Perez (6-0-1, 3 KOs) returns to Vegas for the second time as a pro to take on Key West, Florida’s Sergi Ganjelashvili (4-4-1) in a six round lightweight fight.
Rounding out the card on April 2 is a four round junior featherweight bout between Las Vegas’ Toddy Junior (1-0) and Los Angeles’ Luis Martinez (1-2-1).

JOHN RUIZ QUOTES FROM QUESTIONS ASKED AT TODAY’S MEDIA WORKOUT IN MANCHESTER
Regarding Haye’s win vs. Nicolai Valuev: “I was surprised he (David Haye) got a decision in Germany. Luck was on his side. In congratulate him. He did what he had to do and got the win.”
On Haye’s popularity in the US: “It’s still in the beginning. His name is spreading around. He needs to face somebody who’s been in the heavyweight division and that’s me. He still isn’t well known in the United States.”
On comparing Haye to Evander Holyfield: “Holyfield’s a legend. I can’t compare them today. Every fight is difficult because everybody comes to win. That’s what makes boxing special.”
On changes since he’s been had Miguel Diaz as his head trainer and criticisms: “We’re still here and hopefully this time around we’ll get a win. You’re seeing more of the Ruiz from the past – boxing and punching, not holding. How many guys can say they’ve fought and won the two world heavyweight championships.”
On winning the third world title with a victory against Haye and being mentioned with Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield. “It is going to work this time. No matter what they say, they can’t take it away from me.”
On Haye’s talking: “He can talk all he wants but he knows he’s in a tough fight.”
On an American winning the world heavyweight title: “I was born in the United States and my family is Puerto Rican. I’m a Puerto Rican-American. I’ve accomplished a lot during my career. I am the first Hispanic World Heavyweight Champion, but I’m an American and I’m bringing the belt back home.”
On watching tapes of Haye: “I don’t focus on the other fighter, I focus on myself. He’s going to prepare himself and use the style he believes will win the fight.”
On his experience: “Experience plays an important part but so does youth. We’ll see what comes out on top. I have a new team — trainers Miguel Diaz and Richie Sandoval, and a new promoter, Golden Boy — but there are still some people who’ve been part of the team for a long time. I’m at peace, blessed with my family, and I’ve never been in tune with boxing like this during my career.”
On fighting in England: “I’ve fought here six times (6-0). These fans put favoritism behind them and root for a good fight. I’ve fought everybody in the world, never avoiding anybody, and I’m very proud of that.
I’ve traveled the world and boxing has been a savior for me.”

“TRAINING CAMP NOTES” ANDRE BERTO VS. CARLOS QUINTANA
“LIVE” SATURDAY, APRIL 10TH / 10:30PM(ET) / 7:30PM(PT) HBO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING BankAtlantic Center / Sunrise, Florida “FIGHTING FOR HAITI” NEW YORK, March 31- With training camp coming to a close Andre Berto (25-0, 19 KO’s) and Carlos Quintana (27-2-0,21 KO’s) took time to discuss their training camps as they prepared to meet for the WBC World Championship, The card is being billed as “Fighting For Haiti” which is being promoted by DiBella Entertainment and sponsored by Champs Sports, Where Sport Lives, will be televised “LIVE” on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:30pm (ET) / 7:30pm (PT). The telecast will be available in HD-TV for those viewers who can receive HD on Saturday, April 10th at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. ANDRE BERTO STAYING FOCUS & TRAINING WITH A PURPOSE: With the recent earthquake devastation in Haiti, the loss of family members and the efforts of Berto Dynasty Foundation, which was founded to help raise money for earthquake victims, Andre Berto has manage to keep his focus on Carlos Quintana and is training with a special purpose.
“I’ve had a tremendous training camp and everything has gone as planned. I’m ready for my return to the ring on April 10,” said Berto. “My weight is good and I have been putting in a lot of hard work in the gym. I have some really strong sparring partners that are helping me prepare for what Quintana is going to bring to the table. This fight means a lot to me and has a special purpose. I’m fully focused on Carlos Quintana and want to make a statement with my performance.
Berto said he is not changing his style and has not watched any films of Quintana.
“I’m very good at making adjustments during a fight and I have seen just about every style,” said Berto. “Throughout my career as both a top amateur and now as a professional, I have seen just about everything in the ring. If they’re boxers or bangers, it doesn’t matter. I don’t watch films of my opponents, I let my trainer focus on that aspect.
CONDITIONING: No one has ever questioned Andre conditioning and preparation for a fight, he’s always in shape. Andre has a very extensive conditioning program, which includes, swimming, cycling, track work, sprints and plyometrics when he’s preparing himself for any upcoming fight.
“My brother Cleveland, who is my strength and conditioning coach, and my trainer Tony Morgan have set up a strong strength and conditioning program for me,” Berto said. “I do everything from track work, sprints, and plyometrics to swimming three days a week and cycling classes. The swimming and cycling are new additions to my regimen but they really help me work my body in a different way than a typical boxing workout.”
FIGHT STRATEGY: Carlos Quintana is a very slick southpaw and capable of being an excellent offensive fighter. He’s got good skills and very tricky. Andre feels he has the perfect game plan to come away with a victory. “I don’t want to give away my game plan for the fight, but I have been focusing on recognizing a southpaw’s style, speed, power and agility,” said Berto. “You have to stay on your toes against Quintana, because he’s going to keep you uncomfortable. He doesn’t care if the win is ugly, he just wants to get the win.” Tony Morgan, Andre’s long time trainer has a lot of respect for Quintana and knows this will be a very tough fight, but very confident about victory.
“Carlos Quintana is one of the hardest fights, if not the hardest fight we have yet to come across. He is a very talented fighter,” Morgan said. “Our game plan is going to consist of a high pressure, high volume, punch strategy that breaks Quintana down and leads Berto to a decisive victory. I am completely aware of the talent of Carlos Quintana and we have our work cut out for us. In layman’s terms, my strategy is to seek and destroy.”
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CARLOS QUINTANA TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Although Carlos Quintana has only two more professional fights than Andre, he feels his training and experience will make the difference. “I have so much confidence in my training and conditioning for this fight with Berto,” said Quintana. “I’m always in shape, but I started training in January of this year before I even knew I would be fighting Andre on April 10th. I have a weight/conditioning coach and a licensed nutritionist that have prepared me well. Everything is on schedule, I’m focus physically and mentally for this fight with Berto.” Carlos feels his experience against better opposition will be to his advantage. “Andre is a very good fighter, but he has not been in the ring with the same opposition I have,” Quintana said. “I’ve been in the ring with Joel Julio, Miquel Cotto and Paul Williams twice, that’s experience you can’t teach and will be a huge advantage for me on April 10th.” SPARRING SESSIONS: Quintana has been using several sparring partners, but his main sparring sessions have been with Hector Sanchez and Kenny Galarza. .”I’m very pleased with my sparring sessions. I have really been pushed to the limit by Hector Sanchez and Kenny Galarza,” said Quintana. “They are top professionals and they both have speed and power. Their perfect for this fight with Berto. I will be ready for Berto’s speed and power. Jose Bonilla, manager and trainer for Carlos Quintana also likes the sparring work Hector Sanchez and Kenny Galarza have proivided in training camp. “Hector Sanchez and Kenny Galarza have given us the work we need, they both have speed, power and quick hands,” said Jose. ” Carlos sparrs three times a week and he’s is very sharp and focus with his technique right now.” BASKETBALL: Carlos Qunitana is a huge basketball fan and at one time basketball was part of his conditioning program while preparing for some of his fights early in his career. “I’m a huge basketball fan and at one time was a very good point guard myself,” said Quintana. “Early in my career I would make basketball a part of my conditioning program while in training. In 2001 I hurt my elbow and since then I have not been able to particpate in basketball like I use too. It’s no longer a part of my conditioning program, but I love the game and watch basketball all the time on TV. Watching basketball during training is very relaxing for me.” And who is Quintana favorite basketball player. “The King, LeBron James,” said Quintana. ”I love the NBA, it’s FANTASTIC.” Tickets for the special “Spring Ticket Sale” are now available. PROFESSIONAL STAND-UP FIGHTING – New Combat Sport – Live May 8th Exclusively on GFL
The combat sport industry has witnessed a tremendous amount of growth in the last 10 years with the emergence of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Even though MMA has become very popular, a lot of aspect of the sport has kept most mainstream fans away from it. Stephane Patry and INSTINCT are very proud to introduce the new sport of PROFESSIONAL STAND-UP FIGHTING, a sport that incorporates the techniques of Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing and Sanshou to create the most exciting combat sport in the world. While athletes are allowed the exact same techniques as MMA when standing-up, as soon as one of the fighters is on the ground, the referee steps in and the fight is restarted in the stand-up position. While throws and takedowns are allowed just like in Sanshou and MMA, most of the action in Professional Stand-up Fighting features punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes.
Despite what some may perceive to be an ultra aggressive sport, the respect athletes share for one another is what makes this sport truly great. Fights always end with a congratulatory hand shake or even a long hug between the competitors in an amazing display of class, sportsmanship and respect. These are far from street fights where the one’s only goal is to injure each another. On the contrary, Professional Stand-up Fighting is simply a physical, athletic sport in which athletes try to use their personal style of martial art to better their opponent.
It is critical to stress that this sport indeed has very stringent rules and regulations that allow for a very exciting, explosive and spectacular event, while in the confines of a safe and controlled environment. Combat sports popularity continues to grow with each passing day, and it has actually experienced more growth in the last three years than any other television event in North America. Sanctioned and recognized as a legitimate combat sport by most athletic commissions throughout the world, Professional Stand-up Fighting is on the right track, and is without a doubt THE combat sport of the future.
