Atlantic City welterweight contender Shamone “The Truth” Alvarez will square-off against Ayi Bruce of Ghana this Friday at Bally’s Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City.  The scheduled twelve round bout will serve as the main event of a card promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing.  Alvarez (21-2 12 KO’s) is coming off the biggest win of his eight year pro career, a seventh round knockout victory over Alexis Camacho this past March.  With a win over the experienced Bruce (17-3 12 KO’s), Alvarez would capture the vacant IBA title and would be one step closer to a major title shot in 2011.

Philadelphia’s Raymond Serrano, whose last win came over the aforementioned Bruce in October, will face Geoffery Spruiell in the co-feature. Even though twenty-one year old Serrano (13-0 6 KO’s) is sixteen years his opponent’s junior, he enters the ring with almost as much pro experience as the Spruiell (8-9 2 KO’s).

In other action, Wildwood native Chuck “The Professor” Mussachio will battle Floridian Theo Kruger in an eight round light heavyweight bout.  Mussachio (15-1 5 KO’s) is seeking his forth straight victory since losing to Tommy Karpency last October.

Mussachio, who also currently works as a guidance counselor at a nearby elementary school, is one of the true nice guys in the sport.  Where some athletes are praised for merely staying out of trouble, Mussachio actually improves his community everyday through his work with troubled youths.

Millville junior middleweight Ismael Garcia (2-0) will fight for the second time in three weeks when he takes on Joe Yerdon of Berlin, NY.   Garcia scored a unanimous decision over Corey Preston (who happens to also be on the card against Philadelphia’s Rashad Brown) last month at Harrah’s.

In a battle of New Jersey based super middleweights, Atlantic City’s, Isiah Seldon (2-0, 1 KO), the son of former heavyweight titleholder Bruce Seldon, will square off against the always tough Dover native Todd Eriksson (2-4-1, 1 KO) in a four round bout.

Rounding out the card is female junior welterweight Althera Sanders fighting an opponent to be announced.

BENJI RADACH TO FACE OVINCE ST. PREUX SATURDAY IN ST. LOUIS ON SHOWTIME®

November 30, 2010 by GFL · Leave a Comment
Filed under: MMA News

NEW YORK (Nov. 30, 2010) – Fresh off his fifth straight victory less than two weeks ago, former University of Tennessee standout linebacker turned rising Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) star Ovince St. Preux (8-4) will re-enter the cage to face hard-hitting Benji “Razor” Radach (21-5) this Saturday, Dec. 4, at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

The 6-foot-3, 27-year-old St. Preux notched a unanimous three-round decision over Antwain “The Juggernaut’’ Britt during a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Jackson Convention Complex in Jackson, Miss. on Nov. 19.

Before going the distance with Britt, St. Preux, who fights out of Knoxville, Tenn., had won all four of his fights this year in the first round in a total elapsed time of 7:10.  He called it a night after demolishing tough UFC veteran, Jason “Dooms’’ Day, with a single punch in just eight seconds on July 24.

This will be unquestionably the toughest assignment for St. Preux, who won his STRIKEFORCE debut with a 0:47, first-round TKO (punches) over Chris Hawk last April 17.

St. Preux played for the Vols from 2001-2004. He made history on Feb. 20, 2009, by not only competing in Tennessee’s first sanctioned MMA event, but also by recording the first knockout there.

The heavy-handed Radach, a UFC and IFL veteran, will be making his first start since losing by dramatic third-round knockout (punches) to Scott “Hands Of Steel’’ Smith on April 11, 2009. The epic, see-saw battle with Smith was one of the most memorable fights of the year.

In his outing before last, the rugged Radach registered an exciting second-round TKO (punches) over Murilo “Ninja” Rua live on The CBS Television Network. Radach has scored knockouts in 17 of his 19 career triumphs.

Outside the cage, Radach is remembered for foiling a 2006 armed-robbery attempt in Vancouver, Wash., by physically disarming a gunman who was trying to hold up the restaurant that Radach was patronizing.

In the main event of the star-studded STRIKEFORCE fight card, legendary MMA superstar Dan Henderson (25-8) of Temecula, Calif., will clash with former STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight world champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral (36-8) of Cerritos, Calif., via Brazil, in a rematch between world-class 205-pounders.

Other televised fights: Paul “Semtex’’ Daley (25-9-2) of Nottingham, England, confronts Scott “Hands Of Steel” Smith (17-7, 1 NC), of Elk Grove, Calif., in a matchup of power-punching welterweights (170 pounds), former world champion and exciting local favorite “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (17-6, 1 NC), of Granite City, Ill., goes up against 2000 Olympic Games silver medalist Matt “The Law” Lindland (22-7) of Oregon City, Ore., in a middleweight (185 pounds) bout and former heavyweight world champion Antonio “Big Foot’’ Silva (14-2) of Coconut Creek, Fla., by way of Brazil takes on streaking star Mike “Mak’’ Kyle (18-7), of San Jose, Calif.

Tickets are on sale at Scottrade Center, online at Ticketmaster.com and Strikeforce.com or by phone (800) 745-3000. Doors at Scottrade Center will open for the event at 6 p.m. CT. The first preliminary bout will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the first televised main card fight will begin at 9 p.m.

About STRIKEFORCE
STRIKEFORCE (www.strikeforce.com) is a world-class mixed martial arts cage fight promotion which, on Friday, March 10, 2006, made history with its “Shamrock vs. Gracie” event, the first sanctioned mixed martial arts fight card in California state history.  The star-studded extravaganza, which pitted legendary champion Frank Shamrock against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Cesar Gracie at San Jose’s HP Pavilion, played host to a sold-out, record crowd of 18,265.  Since 1995, STRIKEFORCE, sanctioned by ISKA, has been the exclusive provider of martial arts programming for ESPN and, after 12 years of success as a leading, world championship kickboxing promotion, the company unveiled its mixed martial arts (MMA) series with “Shamrock vs. Gracie.”  In May 2008, West Coast Productions, the parent company of STRIKEFORCE, partnered with Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment (SVS&E), an entity created in 2000 to oversee all business operation aspects of the San Jose Sharks and HP Pavilion at San Jose.  In March 2009, STRIKEFORCE signed a multi-year agreement with SHOWTIME® to stage live events on the premium cable television network.  The promotion has since also produced two live, primetime events on the CBS Television Network.

Chavez Jr. – Wolak off; PPV card for Saturday still on

November 30, 2010 by GFL · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Boxing News

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. – Pawel Wolak fight scheduled for Saturday night as part of a Top Rank PPV card is off due to Chavez being ill but the rest of the show will go on that will feature two title fights.

Chavez woke up with a 103-degree temperature on Tuesday and won’t fight, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN.com.

“He looked like he had shaken it and he worked out Monday. I was there and I saw it,” said Bob Arum, who will promote the show from Anaheim, California. “His legs were a little tight but he worked out OK. [Tuesday morning] he got up with a 103 fever. He tried. You can’t fault the kid. You can’t put him in a fight with a temperature. It is absolutely legitimate.”

Instead of the Chavez-Wolak main event, Arum said he would elevate the scheduled co-feature, a 12-round bantamweight match between the Philippines’ pound-for-pound-ranked Nonito Donaire (24-1, 16 KOs) and former bantamweight titlist Wladimir Sidorenko (22-2-2, 7 KOs) of Ukraine.

“He got sick last Thursday after sparring and we kind of knew something was wrong,” strength coach Alex Ariza told ESPN.com. “He felt a little weak, but he finished 10 rounds [of sparring] but he kept telling Freddie he wasn’t in the groove. We thought maybe it was just a bad day, but later that night when he did an interview he started getting the cold sweats.

“He got back in the ring on Monday. He did four rounds, but once he started hitting the mitts with Freddie, he had cramps in his legs and later that night when we went to my house, he had a low-grade fever. [Tuesday morning] he woke up around 7 when we were going to train and he had a higher fever, about 102 or 103, and we knew this was more serious than we thought. I reported to Bob and he said if the kid is sick, he’s sick and there’s nothing we can do about it between now and Saturday.”

Arum said Wolak (27-1, 17 KOs) would remain on the televised portion of the card and could face Mexico’s Jose Pinzon (18-1-1, 12 KOs), although Wolak and his team wanted to view a video of Pinzon before committing to the bout.

Also on the card: lightweight titlist Humberto Soto (53-7-2, 32 KOs) of Mexico defends his belt against Urbano Antillon (28-1, 20 KOs) of Maywood, Calif., and featherweight contender Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) of Oxnard, Calif., faces Olivier Lontchi (18-1-2, 8 KOs) of Montreal.

“I’m not going to cancel the show,” Arum said. “Anyone who wants a refund at the gate can get a refund. But you can’t cancel the show and do that to the kids who were getting ready to fight for the past six or eight weeks. You have an obligation if you can to follow through on the card.”

WORLD BANTAMWEIGHT TOURNAMENT COMES TO TACOMA World Champion Perez, former World Champions Darchinyan, Agbeko join undefeated Mares in World Title Tournament

November 30, 2010 by GFL · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Boxing News

TACOMA, Wash. – Four of the world’s top bantamweights will battle it out in The Bantamweight Tournament: Winner Takes All semifinal bouts on Saturday, Dec. 11 at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash.

The two-stage, single-elimination tournament of 118-pounders will feature International Boxing Federation world bantamweight champion Yohnny Perez (20-0-1, 14 KOs), two-division world champion Vic Darchinyan (35-2-1, 27 KOs), former IBF world bantamweight title holder Joseph Agbeko (27-2-0, 22 KOs) and undefeated Abner Mares (20-0-1, 13 KOs).

“One of the big complaints about boxing is all the great fighters avoid each other. That’s not what’s happening here,” said Brian Halquist, who is co-promoting the event with Gary Shaw Productions, Golden Boy Promotions, Thompson Boxing Promotions and Don King Productions. “You have four of the best fighters in the world going at it. Washington State has never had a card like this.”

Perez defends his IBF world title against Agbeko in one semifinal match-up, while Darchinyan and Mares vie for the International Boxing Organization title in the other semifinal bout.

The bouts are scheduled for 12 rounds. The winners will clash in the finals in 2011 with the losing fighters competing in a consolation fight.

The eight-bout card begins at 6 p.m. SHOWTIME will televise the fights live at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Undefeated Perez captured the IBF world championship with a unanimous decision over Agbeko on Oct. 31, 2009 – knocking Agbeko to the canvas in the 10th round en route to the title victory.

“Whoever wins goes on; whoever loses, there is still a fight,” said Perez, who knocked out Jose Laureano in his only other local fight on July 28, 2007. “My goal is to win it all. I’m very happy about the tournament because basically everyone included has a title. I don’t consider myself the favorite. I know I’m the world champion but I go into every fight thinking I’m the underdog. I’m going to prepare for this fight and come out victorious.”

Darchinyan captured the IBF super flyweight world championship at the Emerald Queen Casino on Aug. 2, 2008 with a fifth-round knockout of Dmitry Kirillov before unifying the IBF/WBA/WBC belts with a victory over Jorge Arce three months later.

“I moved up to challenge other champions,” Darchinyan said. “The super tournament connects all the dots. I don’t want to defend my titles and fight No. 10, No. 15. If I fight, I collect all belts. The point is not who you can beat, it’s what champions you can beat. I want to prove myself and I want to prove to everyone I’m the best.”

Highlighting the undercard will be a bout for the vacant WBO NABO super flyweight title between top 10-ranked Cesar Seda (19-0-0, 14 KOs) and an opponent to be determined.

Also appearing on the undercard will be current top 10-ranked bantamweight contender and former WBA world flyweight champion Eric Morel (42-2-0, 21 KOs), undefeated Federal Way heavyweight Vincent Thompson (6-0-0, KO) and Vancouver, Wash. Light welterweight Virgil Green (1-0-0).

Super bantamweight Chris Avalos (17-1-0, 14 KOs) meets Cecilio Santos (25-15-3, 15 KOs),

The undercard begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the Emerald Queen Casino box office 1-888-831-7655 and at all Ticketmaster outlets. For more information please visit www.halquistproductions.com.

RISING STARS LATEEF KAYODE AND LUIS FRANCO ON DISPLAY ON SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION Dec. 3, 2010, FROM CHUMASH CASINO RESORT

Unbeaten Roach Disciple Takes on Ed Perry in Cruiserweight Main Event;

Former Cuban Olympian Faces Eric Hunter in Super Featherweight Co-Feature

Live on SHOWTIME® at 11:05 p.m. ET from Santa Ynez, Calif.

NEW YORK (Nov. 30, 2010) – Lateef “Power” Kayode figures it’s just a matter of time before he is stopped by a stranger beyond the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Vine near where he lives and is recognized for knocking people out in the ring.

The Top-10 world-ranked undefeated cruiserweight and Freddie Roach-trained Kayode (14-0, 13 KOs) is on the verge of breakout stardom and SHOWTIME® boxing fans will have another chance to catch this rising star on ShoBox: The New Generation, Friday, Dec. 3, LIVE on SHOWTIME® (11:05 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif.

“I get recognized around my neighborhood but I want the world to know me now,” said the 6-foot-2, 27-year-old Kayode from Lagos, Nigeria, who will fight savvy veteran Ed “The Georgia Thumper” Perry (17-4-2, 10 KOs) of Frankfort, Ind., in a 10-round cruiserweight main event. “The more people who know me the better. Hopefully they will stop me now and say, ‘Hey, I saw you knock that guy out on SHOWTIME.’ ”

In the co-feature former Cuban Olympian Luis “La Estrella” Franco (7-0, 5 KOs) also continues to make a name for himself when he faces Eric “Outlaw” Hunter (15-1, 8 KOs) in a 10-round super featherweight bout.

Having a world-class trainer like Roach in your corner doesn’t hurt a young fighter’s budding profile. Some boxing experts have tabbed Kayode, who is managed by Hollywood writer and director Steven Feder and promoted by Gary Shaw, one of the most intriguing cruiserweight prospects the division has seen in years who only lacks a little bit of seasoning. Roach, who trains the world’s best fighter Manny Pacquiao and Kayode at the famed Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, has been working with Kayode for almost two years.

Roach will once again be in Kayode’s corner on Friday night. “Lateef has been blessed with a natural gift of power,” said Roach, who was named Trainer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2009. “He will fight for a world title someday. I’m not sure when but he will get that shot. That’s what we’re working for everyday.”

As far as adjusting to the new-found fame, Roach said some fighters handle the limelight better than others. “He seems to really embrace the notoriety and wants to be well-known. Like so many things, it just comes naturally to him.”

The WBC ranked No. 6 and WBO No. 8-ranked Kayode is coming off a sixth-round technical knockdown against Epifanio Mendoza on a ShoBox undercard fight Oct. 15 at Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla. It was the 12th consecutive knockout for the fighter dubbed “Power” who has continued to step up his opposition and went the deepest (sixth round) he has ever gone in his pro career in his last fight.

“Freddie’s been with Lateef since his third fight,” said Feder. “We’re not calling Lateef a world champion yet or watching tape of the Steve Cunninghams or the other top fighters in the division. We’re just paying attention to the fight that’s in front of us.

“Activity is one thing Gary (Shaw) has brought us. We needed rounds. We needed experience. We were never telling him to get the early knockdown. We were looking for experience. We don’t walk in there telling him to knock the guy out. If he has to go the distance he has to know he’s OK there. I don’t put it in his head that he’s the knockout champion. Freddie jokes with him all the time and tells him there’s no belt for knockouts. There’s only one belt and that’s for the world title.”

Added Kayode, who fought his first 10 fights as a heavyweight, “Some people think I go into the ring to knock the guy out. I don’t. I go into box. Of course everyone wants to see the knockout but I have to be patient and know it will come when it comes.”

In Perry, Kayode will face a veteran who is days away from turning 35 and a six-year professional who is undefeated in his last nine fights (7-0-1, 1 NSF). His last loss was by a six-round split decision against former accomplished amateur Nicolai Firtha in February, 2007.

“When it comes to experience, I think I’ve got him beat hands down,” Perry said of Kayode. “Me seeing what Lateef can do and knowing what I can do, this should be a good SHOWTIME fight for everybody. That’s what we are – entertainers. It should be a good test for him. I’ve had a few tests, so I know what it takes. I know how a real test feels, too.”

Kayode learned to fight on the mean streets of the Surulere district of Lagos after being bullied. He would go on to become the top Nigerian amateur heavyweight, winning gold medals in Pan-African competitions in Ghana, Morocco and Algeria. He tried to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games but missed the competition and decided to turn pro instead.

Feder says Kayode has what it takes to make it all the way and he couldn’t be happier leading the young man’s career. He predicts it won’t be long now before he is known the world over and not just in Hollywood. “Even the cops in town know who he is,” Feder said. “He could talk his way out of a ticket around there now. He’s a real likable kid. Inside the ring I wouldn’t want to be in there with him but outside he’s just a really great kid.”

Franco, currently ranked No. 13 in the IBF, is hoping his career can go the same way as it has for his former Cuban Olympic teammate and countryman Guillermo Rigondeaux, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who recently won the WBA junior featherweight title on the Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito undercard in just his seventh professional fight.

Franco had more than 400 amateur fights and was 2-2 in the amateur ranks against former teammate Yuriorkis Gamboa. He also has a winning record against another former teammate Erislandy Lara, a fast-rising junior middleweight.

Franco defected in 2009 and currently lives in Miami. He is coming off his best win as a pro in his last fight on Sept. 17 on ShoBox — an eight-round decision win against Wilton Hilario.

He is managed by Henry Foster, who also manages SHOWTIME Super Six World Boxing Classic semifinalist Glen Johnson. “This will be his first 10-round fight, but we’ve always trained as if we’re fighting 10 rounds,” Foster said. “His conditioning won’t be a problem.”

Foster said he planned to retire from the sport when Johnson quit fighting, but Franco has given him a new lease on his career calling him “the best boxing talent I have ever encountered at this early of a stage.”

“The chance to manage Franco kept me in the game,” Foster added. “Luis has great ring generalship acquired through over 400 fights. He has hand speed equal to or better than anyone else in his weight class. He is extremely elusive and hits without getting hit in return. He has no fear and will fight any opponent. All together, he’s just the whole package. I feel Luis Franco will challenge for a world title in 2011, possibly by his 10th or 11th fight.”

Hunter, 24, is a Philadelphia fighter who has won 10 fights in a row since his only loss in January, 2007. In that fight he lost a six-round split decision against Carlos Vinan but said after the fight that he broke his hand in the first round.

The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions.

Curt Menefee will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood and Antonio Tarver serving as expert analysts. Gordon Hall is the executive producer of ShoBox with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

(November 30, 2010 – New York, NY) New York City fight fans looking for some seasons beating are in luck at Broadway Boxing returns to the BB King Blues Club tomorrow night with a action-packed eight bout card that is nearly sold out. In the main event, undefeated fan favorite Gabriel Bracero (12-0, 1 KO) will face the stiffest test of his career in 28 fight veteran Hector Alatore.

DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing is presented by AT&T: Think Possible, the Dominican Republic: It Has It All, and Latinoboxing.com: The #1 Latino Boxing Site. Tickets for Broadway Boxing are on sale now through DiBella Entertainment, and start at only $55. Tickets can be purchased by calling DiBella Entertainment at (212) 947-2577.

In a special attraction in the co-main event, unbeaten Dominican bomber Javier Fortuna (12-0, 9 KOs) faces his toughest test to date in New Jersey slickster Victor Valenzuela (8-0, 1 KO). Also on the undercard are some of the most popular pugilists from the New York region: heavyweight Tor Hamer (12-1, 9 KOs), welterweight Alex Perez (12-0, 7 KOs), heavyweight Sonya Lamonakis (2-0, 1 KO), junior middleweight Steven Martinez (6-0, 6 KOs), and junior middleweight Delen Parsley, Jr. (3-0, 2 KOs).

Bracero, 29, of Brooklyn, is coming off a win in his first ever Broadway Boxing main event, winning a clear eight round decision over Terry Buterbaugh. Bracero is known for his all action style, only matched in intensity by the spirit his rabid fans base brings to each of his fights.

Fortuna, 20, of La Romana, Dominican Republic, is making his US debut after reeling off 12 straight wins to begin his career, including six first round knockouts. Brought to America by famed advisor, promoter, and talent evaluator Sampson Lewkowicz, Fortuna is looking to win over the New York City fight crowd.

Hamer, 27, of New York, NY, is back to his winning ways after starching experienced veteran Terrell Nelson in just one round in October on Broadway Boxing. He’s looking forward to racking up another win as he awaits an opportunity to avenge his controversial split decision loss in May to Kelvin Price.

Perez, 28, of Jersey City, NJ is making his DiBella Entertainment debut. With 12 wins already under his belt, Perez is on the fast track to big opportunity in the near future.

Lamonakis, 35, of New York, NY, is a school teacher by day, and by night a fighter who uses the ring a classroom for her opponents. This will mark the third appearance on Broadway Boxing for Lamonakis this year.

Martinez, 20, of Bronx, NY, is one of the latest additions to the DiBella Entertainment stable. Managed by New York Giants running back, Brandon Jacobs, the young junior middleweight is surrounding himself with people who know what it takes to be a champion. Martinez will look to keep his perfect knockout percentage intact in his second Broadway Boxing outing.

Parsley, 22, of Brooklyn, NY, is a former amateur standout and son of famed Gleason’s trainer Delen “Blimp” Parsley, who doubles as his trainer. Parsley will be making his Broadway Boxing debut.
