Goodwin promotions present an evening of boxing
By Michael Serra
It’s a case of history in the making on Saturday the 4th of June at the historic hall that’s been dubbed ‘the spiritual home of boxing’ as Olivia Goodwin will create boxing history in the promotional sense when she become’s the youngest ever British boxing promoter!
Olivia whose only twenty years old promotes a marathon card of fifteen, yes fifteen fights!
Featured are a couple of ten round fights featuring Ryan Barrett at lightweight against Geofrey Munika who a good few years back held current British welterweight champion Lee Purdy to a disputed draw at this very venue!
The other ten rounder has Toks Owoh pitted against an opponent yet to be named oponent at cruiser.
Also booked for action on this marathon show at light middle are Sam Standing against Aaron Fox, and while with the 11st brigade Nathan Weise takes on Gary Cooper, no not the former British light middle champ from the late 80’s of the same name!, then again what with Bernard Hopkins recent performance you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise!
A couple of welterweight fights see Brett O Callaghan and Danny O’Connor pitted against gritty journeymen Matt Scriven and Danny Dontchev respectively!
Back up to cruiser and heavy, {what with all this weight jumping I’m feeling dizzy!} you have Mitchell Balker who takes on Harri Miles a one time prospect from the Calzaghe camp! and Prizefighter contestant Ali Adams against I guy whose name I can’t spell let alone pronounce! oh by the way that’s at heavy!
Down at middle you have Mark Adam’s {no relation to Ali, Adam’s that is!} making his pro bow and also at that weight is Kris Agyei Dua who’ll be looking to do something against Luke Osman, who comes to fight, {he once escaped a car crash on the way to a fight and still fought and won against Kenroy Lambert!} Also at middle is William Cayzer making his debut has is Diego Burton against there respective oponents!
Down at lightweight Luton prospect Michael Devine takes on the well travelled and aptly named Dan Carr over four at light and then finally up at super middle transplanted Albanian Eder Kurti takes on tough Jodie Meikle who last time at the York Hall lost on points to Margate light heavy Daniel Woodgate, the Margate fighter who also fights on the show against switch hitter Sabie Monteith which looks to be an interesting affair, Monteith in his pro debut boxed fellow Margate fighter Jack ‘13′ Morris back in 2008!
All fights other than the two aforementioned ten rounders will be contested over four rounds!

Thompson registered his second career knockout in his last fight on March 19 when he stopped Ryan Shay in the second round.
“Vincent has all the tools to be a dominating heavyweight in this sport,” said promoter Brian Halquist. “His speed and power was on full display in his last bout. He has improved dramatically every time he steps inside the ring. The sky really is the limit for him.”
Thompson’s bout is one of four heavyweight contests on the card. Jonte Willis (7-0-1, 3 KOs) squares off against Shane Andreesen (10-3-0, 6 KOs) in another highly-anticipated heavyweight clash.

Carl Froch media day quotes
WBC super middleweight champion Carl “The Cobra” Froch participated in a brisk 30-minute media workout and then met with reporters for a half-hour Tuesday at Mendez Boxing Gym in New York City.
This Saturday, June 4, Froch (27-1, 20 KOs) will defend against former world champion Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs) in a Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinal live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from Adrian Phillips Ballroom at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
The Froch-Johnson 12-round bout will be preceded on the telecast by a scheduled
10-rounder from Denmark between ex-world champion Mikkel Kessler
(43-2, 32 KOs) and world-ranked Mehdi Bouadla (23-3, 11 KOs) that will be
shown on same-day delay.
“Rachael (Cordingley) texted me that our son, Rocco, is walking. He took his first steps and I missed it. And I’m going to take that out on Johnson,” said a fit and confident Froch, who boasted Tuesday about being only two pounds over the 168-pound limit after a big breakfast and just eating lunch. “Johnson is perfect for me. He’s made for me. He’ll be right there, right in front of me.
“The winner of this fight is going to the Final of the best boxing tournament in the world, the Super Six World Boxing Classic. And the winner is going to be me. I heard Johnson’s team talking about an easy fight. They can think what they want. I’m not concerned with that rubbish.”
Kayode Finishing up ‘Best Training Camp Ever’
According to manager Steve Feder, cruiserweight powerhouse Lateef “Power” Kayode (16-0, 14 KOs) is finishing up his best training camp ever in preparation for his nationally televised battle with Rhode Island contender Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (20-2, 14 KOs).
Kayode and Godfrey will meet on June 10 in the 10-round main event at Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, California, and live on Showtime’s popular series ShoBox: The New Generation at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
“This training camp was our best to date,” said Feder. “In addition to our six days a week at Wild Card Boxing, we were able to work with Heavyweight Chris Arreola for two weeks in Riverside. He taught us a lot about dealing with and applying pressure. We also worked again with strength and conditioning coach Mike Vale and we added Juan Ruiz Bernabe to work specifically on short bursts and balance for speed work.”
Feder says trainer Freddie Roach has made some adjustments in Kayode’s style that will make Godfrey easy pickings for the 27-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria… a perfect return from what some thought was a disappointing performance in his last fight.
“The last fight was good for us because Lateef now knows that from here on, he will have to hunt his opponents down to get them to trade. 14 fighters who traded with Lateef ended up on the canvas. We see this fight as perfect for us coming off the Nick Iannuzzi fight. Iannuzzi came with a game plan to punch and run and go the distance without taking any chances of going toe-to-toe and we expect Godfrey to rely on a similar tactic. Lateef has to get used to this.”
Team Kayode also doesn’t hesitate to admit the big picture, as they see it.
“Since turning pro in August of 2008, it’s been a journey with one goal in mind. Lateef wants to be the world champion. End of story. Then, once he’s obtained that coveted title, at some point we will turn heavyweight and do it all over again. He ultimately wants to be heavyweight champion. After his cruiser campaign is totally satisfied, we’ll take the natural steps.”
It wouldn’t have been considered strange if Kayode had taken a few easier fights to get his KO MOJO back, but Feder says that wasn’t even a consideration.
“We had a slew of opponents we could have taken on as tune-ups before picking back up, but we saw nothing that dictated us to take a step back. We discussed the plan with our matchmaker John Beninati and promoter, Gary Shaw and we all decided that we have the best cruiserweight prospect in the world and taking on anyone less than a Matt Godfrey would be a step back.”
Khan to battle Judah July 23rd in Vegas
Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that WBA 140 lb champion Amir Khan will take on IBF beltholder Zab Judah in a unification bout that will take place July 23rd in Las Vegas.
Richard Schaefer, Khan’s promoter of Golden Boy Promotions offered the fight to resurgent former three-division champion Erik Morales, who works with Golden Boy, but he rejected the fight. That left Judah, a big name and owner of a world title, as the obvious choice. “We’ve agreed on the terms and the contracts are being drawn,” said Judah’s promoter Kathy Duva
“I told Zab I’d rather just get the promotion going and get him in the gym and we’ll make money at the site in Las Vegas if we promote it well,” Duva said. “Zab agreed. At some point you stop quibbling over a couple of points. Zab will make money when he beats this guy. That’s where the upside is. They each have a world title, but the thing Khan has that Zab doesn’t is a multi-fight agreement with HBO. That’s where his strength comes from. And when Zab beats him, HBO will be seeking out Zab Judah for a multi-fight contract. He’ll be the man at that point.”
“I got what I wanted, so I am happy. Now it’s time to go work,” said Judah, who was on his way to the gym for a training session. “I’ve been praying on this fight. My goal is to be undisputed champion at two weights. I did it at 147 and I’m gonna do it at 140 starting with Amir Khan. I’m gonna work hard. I’m very experienced, so whichever way he brings the fight I can deal with it and take it from him.
“I know Amir wanted the Bradley fight, but who wouldn’t? Bradley can’t break an egg. A fight with ‘Super’ Judah is not a fight Amir wanted. Don’t let him lie to you.”
“Zab’s a good fighter. He’s strong, he’s fit. All the stuff on Twitter is fun, but we’re both professionals. It’s just spicing things up,” Khan told ESPN.com a couple of days before the deal was agreed to. “He was undisputed champion at 147 and now he’s a champion at 140. … If Bradley don’t want me, I’m happy to take Judah on and beat him.”
“You see Bradley and Morales turning down this fight with Khan and, at some point, you just say, ‘OK, thank you.’ Zab is very excited to get the fight. So is Whitaker,” Duva said. “This leads Zab to a very nice position in the fall where he’s got major fights and nothing but major fights when he wins. We’re all very excited about it. We believed since he came back to junior welterweight that he could beat everyone in the division. He’s already taken out Matthysse and Mabuza and now it’s Khan.”
Said Judah, “My trainer, Pernell Whitaker, will have a great game plan for this fight. I knew this fight was coming and I’ve been preparing myself. I have already been training. I wish we could do a press conference tomorrow so I could take off my shirt and show everybody how ready I am already.”
“Freddie Roach against Pernell Whitaker, that’s a helluva trainer matchup,” Duva said. “It will be really interesting to watch them go head to head and try to outdo the other guy’s game plan.”
Golden Boy and Main Events will share the undercard and Duva said she intends to put welterweight contender Joel “Love Child” Julio (37-4, 31 KOs) on the card in one of her company’s fights. Julio scored a lopsided decision win against Anges Adjaho on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” on May 20.
“Our plan is to put him on the card,” she said. “We’re looking for somebody interesting for him to fight. Maybe we can match him with one of Golden Boy’s fighters.”
BRANDON RIOS AND URBANO ANTILLON RUMBLE FOR WORLD LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE Saturday, July 9, at The Home Depot Center Live on SHOWTIME®
LOS ANGELES (May 31, 2011) – Undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion “Bam Bam” BRANDON RIOS will make the first defense of his world title when he takes on two-time world title challenger and current Top-Five-rated contender URBANO ANTILLO, Saturday, July 9, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The co-main event will feature former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion KERMIT CINTRON and CARLOS MOLINA in a 10-round super welterweight fight. The SHOWTIME Championship Boxing telecast will also include highlights from overseas as IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (28-0, 23 KOs), defends his title for the eighth time – but first in his home country of Romania – against mandatory challenger Jean-Paul Mendy (29-0-1, 16 KOs), from France.
Promoted by Top Rank, tickets for The Home Depot Center’s Rios vs. Antillon World Lightweight Championship fight card, priced at $125, $75, $50 and $25, are now on sale! They can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.Ticketmaster.com as well as The Home Depot Center Box Office (open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Rios (27-0-1, 19 KOs), a native of Lubbock, Tex., now fights out of Oxnard, Calif. Arguably the division’s most exciting fighter, he returns to the ring on the heels of his biggest professional victory, a 10th round TKO of defending champion Miguel Acosta, on February 26, to capture the WBA lightweight title. An all-action fan-friendly fighter, Rios, who is trained by former IBF junior lightweight champion Robert Garcia, possesses a self-described “throwback” style and a warrior’s mentality that screams excitement as proven by the fact that eight of his previous nine victories have been by knockout. Highlights of that streak include victories, all inside the distance, over Acosta (28-3-2), Anthony Peterson (30-0), Jorge Teron (23-1-1) and Omri Lowther (14-2), who had a combined record of 95-6-3 when they were defeated by Rios.
Antillon (28-2, 20 KOs), of Maywood, Calif., has given sensational performances in recent fights, most notably his last one, against World Boxing Council lightweight champion Humberto Soto last December, the consensus “Fight of the Year.” Though he lost to Soto by one point on two of the judges’ cards due to a controversial point deduction by the referee, Antillon emerged from that fight a certified world-class contender. Trained by Abel Sanchez, 10 of Antillon’s last 11 victories have been by knockout. Notable scalps hanging from Antillon’s belt include Rene Gonzalez (27-1-1), Tyrone Harris (23-4), former world title challenger Daniel Attah (24-4-1), and Bobby Pacquiao (28-13-3), the younger brother of Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao.
Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KOs), of Carolina, Puerto Rico, captured the IBF welterweight title in 2006 by knocking out Mark Suarez in the fifth round. He held the title for close to two years, successfully defending it against Walter Matthysse and Jesse Feliciano, both by knockout, before losing it to Antonio Margarito in 2008. Since moving up in weight in 2009 Cintron has become a force in the superr welterweight division where he is still the only man to defeat top-rated contender Alfredo Angulo. He also boasts a Draw against 2010 Fighter of the Year and World Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez.
Molina (18-4-2, 6 KOs), a native of Michoacán, México, who fights out of Chicago, enters this fight riding a three-year, 11-bout unbeaten streak. In 2011 he knocked out Allen Conyers (12-4) in the seventh round and had a 10-round Draw against undefeated contender Erislandy Lara (15-0). Other highlights of Molina’s unbeaten streak include an NABO junior middleweight title victory over Danny Perez (34-5), and 10-round decision victories over Ed Paredes (21-2), and Alexis Camacho (17-1).

Undefeated National Champion Boxer Ryan Coyne Meets Cardinals Three-Time MVP Albert Pujols At Pre-Game Batting Practice on Saturday At Coors Field in Denver
Prizefighter Takes Break From Training in Colorado Springs to Visit Hometown Team
DENVER—WBC-USNBC national cruiserweight champion Ryan Coyne joined his hometown-favorite Cardinals at pre-game batting practice on Saturday at Coors Field in Denver before the Cards took on the Rockies. Coyne was lucky enough to spend some time at the cage with Major League Baseball’s three-time National League Most Valuable Player Albert Pujols.
They posed for photographers with Pujols landing “one on the kisser” of Coyne. Maybe Pujols should have enlisted Coyne to land a few punches on the Rockies’ before the game on Saturday as the home team went on to defeat the Cards 15-4.
Coyne has set up his camp in Colorado to gain the benefits of high-altitude training before making his first world title appearance on June 25 against defending WBA cruiserweight champion Guillermo Jones (37-3-2, 29 KOs), from Panama, at The Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo.
Tickets priced at $25, $50, $125 and $300 are on sale now and can be purchased at the Family Arena Box Office, all MetroTix outlets including online at metrotix.com or charge by phone at (314) 534-1111. All tickets include parking.
Coyne graduated from St. Charles High School where he was named “St. Charles County Football Player of the Year” in 2001. He played collegiate football at University of Missouri from 2001 to 2002. Injuries shortened his football career, and he returned to St. Charles to pursue a boxing career while earning a bachelor’s degree from Lindenwood University in 2005. Coyne also is known for having fought into the semi-finals during the fourth season of The Contender, televised on Versus, before suffering an accidental headbutt that forced him to leave the competition.
