- Friday, September 2, 2011 9:00pm ET featuring Muay Thai Premier League from the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, CA. In the main event, the WMC World Junior Middleweight Title (154 lb) will be at stake as Buakaw Por. Pramuk (197-21-12, Thailand) battles Warren Stevelmans (54-14-4, South Africa) for the prestigious championship. With close to 200 victories to his credit, Por. Pramuk is one of the elder statesmen in Muay Thai and his commitment and consistency to the sport is unmatched. He hails from the birthplace of Muay Thai (Thailand) and plans to give the fans in attendance and watching live on GFL.tv a highlight reel of authentic hard hitting and kicking Muay Thai fighting. His opponent, Stevelmans, is also a grizzled veteran in the sport and will not be intimidated by the living legend that is standing across the ring from him. Both fighters always push the action and look for a knockout but these men have trained their bodies to take an inhuman amount of punishment so fight fans could be in for a real treat if this fight goes the distance. Make no mistake, Buakaw Por. Pramuk and Warren Stevelmans will put on a show that will have the whole sport talking. In the co-main event, the WMC Intercontinental Junior Middleweight Championship (154 lb) will be on the line as Champion Baxter Humby (39-7, USA) defends his title against Zidov Domenik (55-25, Switzerland). Humby won the title in 2010 and has been on a tear for the last year, but he has never faced an opponent like Domenik who has a very high percentage of knockouts for this sport with 43 of his 55 victories coming by KO. In a sport that requires you to deliver vicious blows to your opponent, nobody does that better than the challenger, Domenik. The champion is in for a dog fight, but Humby should have the crowd at his back as he is fighting in his home country and will look to deliver an impressive victory to what no doubt will be a rabid crowd. In tournament action, Nathan Corbett (52-2, Australia) fights Tomas Hron (54-14-2, Czech Republic) and Filip Verlinden (37-6-1, Belgium) battles Martin Jahn (40-10) where the winners will advance in the heavyweight division. There are still four more divisions on this card!

- Saturday, September 3, 2011 6:00pm ET featuring Evolution Fighting Championship 7 from the Rahway Rec Center, Rahway, NJ. In the main event, Ben Syers takes on Caleb Solano in a long awaited showdown that has fans buzzing. Syers is reigning and defending Evolution FC champion and Solano is the man who wants to take his belt. MMA Promoter Steven Katz, who is also the Evolution Fighting matchmaker, is excited about this match up. “They’ve both been working their striking,” said Katz. “They’ve both been working their takedowns and takedown defense. As far as their training, as far as their striking to grappling, they’re both pretty much equally focused. Technically speaking, who has the better striking or who has the advantage in striking, that we’ll see Saturday night. They’ve both shown the willingness to step up and bang and throw shots. It’s a great fight and I’m glad it’s on my show.” In the co-main event, Mark Agnew was supposed to be fighting for the vacant 147 pound title against Dwayne Holman, but he’s out of the country and won’t be back in time. So Team Renegade fight Taylor Costantino, Syers’s teammate, has stepped up to take his place and challenge Holman. Costantino’s decision to fight has impressed Steve Katz. In the third title bout, this one for the 126 pound strap, Caleb Solano’s brother Ariel takes on Mike Colon. This match too is going to be a barnburner. “Both of these guys have something to prove in this fight,” Katz said. “So that’s going to be another great fight, 126 pounds, for that belt, which is vacant. And the contenders for that belt, I’ve got a lot of guys fighting between 130-135 pounds that can make 126.” 16 total fights are scheduled.

Tomasz Adamek Pre Fight Conference Call

This afternoon Tomasz Adamek, 44-1, 28 KO’s, took time before flying to Poland to chat with the media about his upcoming WBC Heavyweight Championship battle against reigning WBC champion Vitali Klitschko, 42-2, 39 KO’s.

“The Fight of the 21st Century” will be held Saturday, September 10th at the new Municipal Stadium in Wroclaw, Poland. More than 40,000 spectators are expected to attend what will be the greatest boxing event in Polish history.

The fight will be available throughout Poland on PPV. Fans should contact their Satellite or Cable provider to find out how to order the event, which will cost 40 PLN per subscriber.

Fans are urged to order early, as it is anticipated that the demand will be for Poland’s first ever PPV event will be great and viewers could be shut out if they wait until the last minute.

The PPV broadcast will begin at 9 PM CET.

Credits: Mike Gladysz – Team Adamek

Kathy Duva, Main Events CEO: “I am already in Wroclaw. They are putting the finishing touches on the inside of the stadium. Everything is just about ready to go. It is very exciting here. This is all everyone is talking about.”

Do you think you’ll have an advantage with the judges since the fight is in Poland? Kathy Duva: “The judges are being sent by the WBC and they are from all over the world.”

What is your game plan? Roger Bloodworth, Adamek Trainer: “It’s not a good idea to give up your game plan before a fight. We don’t have just one game plan. It all depends on what Vitali brings to the ring. We’ll know after the first two rounds. We’re prepared no matter what . We’re confident.”

What is Tomasz’s edge over Vitali? Tomasz Adamek: “I am quicker, my spirit is strong. I think my mind is stronger. I respect him but I think I am (an) uncomfortable (fighter) for him.”

How do you feel about fighting in Poland? Roger Bloodworth: “Tomasz is very disciplined. Fighting in Poland will not distract him. He has fought in Poland before. This time the crowd of course will be larger, but that won’t make a difference.”

Tomasz Adamek: “The whole country believes in me. It’s very important to me. I know they say I am not the favorite, but in Poland I will have millions cheering for me.”

Kathy Duva: “Anyone who fights Klitschko is cosidered an underdog. If you talk to any of the cab drivers in Poland they believe Tomasz is the favorite. I think it’s wonderful to be the underdog. Tomasz is kind of back to where he was when he fought Cunningham, he doesn’t have the pressure, the champ does. Everyone in Poland is picking Tomasz to win! It’s so much fun to be here.”

Kathy Duva: “Ziggy (Rozalski) told me Tomasz will be carrying two flags into the ring: the Polish flag and the US flag, his first and second home. He will be carrying the weight of both countries on his shoulders.”

Vitali Klitschko is much taller what are your thoughts about that? Roger Bloodworth: “Last 3 fights Tomasz fought were with tall guys I think we learned a lot from those.”

Tomasz Adamek: “Every training camp I get a little better and I learn a little more. Roger is a good teacher. This training camp was a very good, we trained 10 weeks. First two weeks we did conditioning and then we went to Pennsylvania for boxing. We worked on my speed, speed is power. I’m looking every place I can to hit him (Klitschko). My heart is good, my spirit is good. Size is not so important in the ring. Heart is important.”

What do you plan to do to neutralize Klitschko’s right hand? Roger Bloodworth: “I’ll tell you what we plan NOT to do and that’s block his right hand with Tomasz’s head!”

Fight predictions? Tomasz Adamek: ” I believe you have to have the right frame of mind to get in the ring. I know how to beat Vitali. I know that he will be expecting somebody who will be intimidated, even scared, but this will not be the case for me. He will not get a fighter standing in front of him, waiting for execution and payday. He will get somebody with no fear and the will and skills to win. This will be deciding factor on September 10.”

Vitali Klitschko said during his media day that he likes your style, and looks forward to having an open, entertaining fight with you on September 10 in Wroclaw. Do you believe it will happen? Tomasz Adamek: “I truly hope so. I hope Vitali will keep his word to make September 10 a wide open affair, because to have an entertaining fight you need two fighters. I will do everything I can, as always, to do so. On the side note: I’m happy Klitschko is watching so much of my already year old [Michael] Grant fight. Because I’m so much better…100 percent better.”

BRING ON THE ‘VINSANITY’: TOP PROSPECTS VINCENT ARROYO, HECTOR SANCHEZ COLLIDE IN MAIN EVENT FRIDAY, SEPT. 9, LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

August 31, 2011 by GFL · Leave a Comment

NEW YORK (Aug. 31, 2011) – When last seen on ShoBox: The New Generation, Vincent “Vinsanity” Arroyo scored an exciting upset majority decision over then-unbeaten welterweight prospect Willie Nelson.

On Friday, Sept. 9 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) live on SHOWTIME®, Arroyo (11-1, 7 KOs), of South Bronx, N.Y., returns as the headliner in a high stakes, crossroads match against Puerto Rican amateur standout Hector “El Flaco” Sanchez (19-1, 9 KOs), of Rio Piedras, P.R. The 143-pound max, 10-round clash will move one fighter a step closer to contender status while the other will take an equally impactful step back.

In the telecast’s co-feature, popular ShoBox alumnus and hard-hitting Nigerian cruiserweight Lateef Kayode (17-0, 14 KOs), of Hollywood, Calif., will risk his unblemished record and trajectory toward a world title shot against southpaw Felix “Bad News” Cora, Jr. (22-5-2, 12 KOs), of Galveston, Tex., in a 10-rounder from Grand Casino Hinckley in Hinckley, Minn.

The Gary Shaw Productions-promoted event is the first of five ShoBox telecasts in eight weeks. The other telecasts – all Friday nights – are Sept. 30, Oct. 7, Oct. 21 and Oct. 28.

The aggressive-minded Arroyo, 24, is in peak form coming off two consecutive wins over previously undefeated boxers. Before dropping the 6-foot-3 Nelson three times en route to winning by the scores of 75-73 twice and 74-74 on April 8, the 5-foot-8 boxer-brawler rallied from the brink of defeat to register a dramatic eighth-round knockout over Jeremy Bryan (then 13-0) on April 17, 2010.

Entering the final round against Bryan, Arroyo clearly needed a knockout to win. Through seven sessions, he’d won a total of one round on one of the three judges’ scorecards. But he came out charging and firing punches in the eighth and staggered Bryan with a left hook. With the former two-time National Golden Gloves champion slumped against the ropes, Arroyo scored a knockdown with a left hook and right-uppercut combination. Bryan, out cold, was counted out at 1:43.

“I learned to dig down in that fight,’’ said Arroyo, whose father was a Golden Gloves champion. “It was just a matter of me doing what I’m supposed to do. I know I’m never going to stop pushing.”

As for facing much taller opponents, Arroyo says, “Height doesn’t do anything. I’m a warrior. If I come to get you, height won’t save you. I always want to test my will. They call me ‘Vinsanity’ for a reason.”

Arroyo’s lone loss came on a six-round decision to Goossen Tutor prospect Mike Dallas, Jr. on Sept. 12, 2009. Though behind on points, Arroyo nearly had Dallas out in the final round.

After fighting in the amateurs and competing in the Golden Gloves — Arroyo owns an amateurs win over Danny Jacobs — he turned pro at the age of 18 on Aug. 17, 2005, in Rochester, N.Y., and won his initial nine starts. The Sanchez fight was originally scheduled for last June 11 on ShoBox, but Arroyo pulled out of the fight after injuring an ankle a week before the bout.

Sanchez, 25, a vaunted member of Team Puerto Rico, needs a victory to move forward and jump-start his career. This will be just his fourth start since December 2008 and first since winning by 2:09, first-round TKO over Nelson Sanchez on Aug. 21, 2010, in the Dominican Republic.

A four-time Puerto Rican national champ and 2000 Junior Olympic Bronze medalist, Sanchez compiled an amateur record of 97-10. He planned to try out for the 2004 Olympics, but opted to turn pro instead.

After going 18-0 at the outset of a career that began March 4, 2005, Sanchez suffered his only defeat on a startling fifth-round TKO to Cleotis Pendarvis two fights ago on April 2, 2010, in Las Vegas.

Sanchez scored two knockdowns in the first and dominated the initial three rounds, but veteran southpaw Pendarvis rallied in the fourth and scored a knockdown in the fifth. An unsteady Sanchez got up but the referee, Russell Mora, halted matters at 2:29 as Sanchez protested.

At 6-foot-1, Sanchez is two inches shorter than Nelson but still tall for a welterweight. A solid puncher, his most noteworthy triumph came on an eight-round decision over former world champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop’’ Corley on April 10, 2009. It was the sole ring appearance of the year for Sanchez, who also had a noteworthy KO2 win over Mexican standout Albert Rodriguez (8-0-1) on Oct. 8, 2008.

Sanchez, who began to box at the age of 13 and went pro at 18, is at his best when he can utilize his long arms and box from the outside. Like many young Puerto Ricans, his idol is Felix “Tito’’ Trinidad.

Kayode is the only cruiserweight contender in the world ranked in the top five by all four major boxing organizations. He is No. 1 in the World Boxing Association (WBA), No. 3 in the World Boxing Organization (WBO), No. 4 in the World Boxing Council (WBC) and No. 5 in the IBF. If triumphant against Cora, Kayode could be next up to challenge WBA champion Guillermo Jones.

“I already believe I’m the best cruiserweight in the world. I’m just waiting for my chance to prove it,’’ said Kayode, who has developed and honed his skills on Shobox. This will be his fifth appearance.

The Freddie Roach-trained Kayode, 28, will try to resume his knockout-winning ways after going the 10-round distance in his last two starts, both on ShoBox in Santa Ynez, Calif., first by Nicholas Iannuzzi on Feb. 4, 2011, and in his last start by Matt Godfrey on June 10. Before Iannuzzi, the 6-foot-2 Kayode’s previous 13 fights, all won by knockout, lasted a total of 43 rounds.

“Going the distance is fine as long as I win,’’ said Kayode, who won a four-round decision in his pro debut on Aug. 15, 2008. “The experience I get going 10 rounds and knowing I can go 10 is invaluable. I learn from them so when my time comes, I’ll be ready. I never go in looking for a knockout anyway.’’

While the 6-foot-2 Kayode will be favored and would prefer to win explosively, Cora is anything but a gimme. The record of the five fighters who defeated him was 98-3-1 entering their respective fights.

The 6-foot-tall Cora, 31, is a durable boxer with decent skills. A former contestant on The Contender television series, he’s hung tough with much tougher than Kayode. He’s gone 12 rounds in his last two outings, losing to unbeaten local favorite Pawel Kolodziej in a bout in Poland for the WBA International title last March 5 and to German Enad Licina in an IBF elimination bout on Nov. 13, 2010, in England.

Cora has won a couple minor titles at cruiserweight. He outpointed Michael Simms to capture the United States Boxing Association (USBA) crown in June 2004 and registered a ninth-round TKO over Arthur Williams to garner the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) belt in October 2005.

Bernardo Osuna will call the ShoBox action from ringside with Steve Farhood and Antonio Tarver serving as expert analysts. Gordon Hall is the executive producer of ShoBox with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Future Book: A glimpse at the upcoming four ShoBox fight cards after Sept.9:

A WBC welterweight elimination fight between undefeated, No. 1-ranked Ajose Olusegun (29-0, 14 KOs) of Nigeria and No. 6 Ali Chebah (35-1, 28 KOs) of France will highlight a Sept. 30 card at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez. The 12th-ranked lightweight in the WBO, Colombia’s exciting, hard-hitting Darley Perez (22-0, 17 KOs) will make his ShoBox debut against southpaw Marvin Quintero (22-3, 18 KOs) of Mexico in the co-feature co-promoted by Shaw and DiBella Entertainment.

In a quintessential ShoBox main event on Oct. 7, Ugandan Sharif Bogere (20-0, 12 KOs) of Las Vegas takes on Dominican Francisco Contreras (16-0, 13 KOs) of Irvington, N.J., in a clash of unbeaten lightweights presented by Golden Boy Promotions.

Arguably the No. 1 super middle prospect in the world, Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez (19-0, 14 KOs) of Worcester, Mass., will face an opponent to be announced in the DiBella-promoted Oct. 21 main event.

On Oct. 28, Goossen Tutor Promotions will promote a ShoBox card on the eve of the Super Six World Boxing Classic culminating bout: The Final between WBA Super Middleweight titlist Andre Ward and his WBC counterpart Carl Froch.

All matchups and venues for the aforementioned fight cards will be formally announced soon.

The Scottish-born Marks, who is currently residing in Louisiana, is excited to get back in the ring against the young Olympian.

Olympic teammate Molina, who also boasts an undefeated record, started his career with four KOs, followed by four dominant decisions after recovering from a lingering hand problem. Molina looks to re-establish his KO power, when he steps in the ring with a hard hitting opponent from Golden Meadow, Louisiana in John Revish (10-4-2 8 KOs). In his 16 professional bouts, Revish, who studies psychology at LSU, is a veteran of two world title challenges, by far the most experienced opponent for the young Molina.

LOCKEDN’ LOADED RETURNS ON SEPTEMBER 23 RISING PROSPECT TO ELEVATE SO-CAL’S LATE SUMMER HEAT WAVE

Riverside’s Junior Welterweight, Jose “El Niño” Reynoso, returns to his favorite
stomping grounds at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario to accept the challenge of
Adan Hernandez, of El Pasp, Texas, on Friday, September 23 as once again the Thompson
Boxing Promotions ‘Locked N’ Loaded’ fight card returns to the popular fight venue.

Reynoso (14-3-1, 2 KOs) brings his southpaw wizardry once again to California’s
Inland Empire as he looks to stretch his unbeaten streak to seven. It’s been more
than two years since anyone been able to claim a victory over Reynoso. Since that
time he’s proven to be a puzzling opponent for everyone who has faced him including
Aris Ambriz, Hector Serrano and Santos Pakau. A berth in the junior welterweight
contender’s list awaits him.

Hernandez (14-7, 5 KOs) who hails from El Paso, Texas, has competed against the
top prospects in the country including Danny Garcia, Rock Allen, Anthony Peterson
and Urbano Antillon. None were able to knock out the Texas hard-hitting prizefighter.
He aims for a victory over the meteoric rising Reynoso that could revamp his career.

Tickets for “LOCKED N’ LOADED” are priced at $75, $45, and $30. They are available
now and may be purchased by calling 714-935-0900.

In the co-main event, Jonathan “Lil’ Thundr’” Arellano (9-0-1, 2 KOs) fights his
first eight-rounder and faces Matamoros, Mexico’s, Fernando Camacho (9-1, 3 KOs)
in a junior featherweight prospect showdown. Arellano, who resides in Ontario and
trains in Riverside, has shown to be an adept boxer. Camacho intends to show his
boxing prowess in front of an American crowd. It’s a pivotal fight for both pugilists.

On the undercard, feisty Sindy Amador of Riverside returns to Ontario and finds
Mayela Perez ready to interrupt her undefeated junior flyweight streak. Amador (4-0,
1 KO) attacks brutally and has proven hard to be hard to handle. Mexico’s Perez
(9-13-3) has fought four world champions including superstar Ana Maria Torres. The
crafty Mexican boxer from Saltillo, Mexico, is equipped to derail the steadily rising
Amador.

In the supporting bout, Richard “The Terminator” Contreras has flashed past all
six of his opponents so far and looks to add one more victim to his list when he
meets Olvin Mejia of Texas. Contreras (6-0, 5 KOs) fights out of San Bernardino
and shows amazing strength for a junior featherweight. Mejia (4-4-3, 4 KOs) has
fought six undefeated fighters in his short career and knocked out or drew with
three. He’s also no stranger to California and will seek revenge after losing during
his last appearance in July against the power-puncher Abraham Lopez.

Also featured on the card is an exciting 6-round junior welterweight clash. Venezuela’s
Jhon Ortega (6-0-1, 6 KOs) against the ever-ready Alex Viramontes (9-8, 3 KOs) of
Riverside. Ortega has shown amazing speed, outstanding power and the skillful ability
to set up his power. Viramontes is never an easy opponent and has the ability to
beat the unsuspecting.

Other fights on the show include Oxnard’s undefeated welterweight Hugo Centeno (8-0,
6 KOs), Colton’s John Berrelleza and El Paso’s Albert Tovar.

Bouts subject to change. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the first bell rings at 7:30
pm. The Doubletree Hotel is located at 222 North Vineyard Avenue in Ontario. The
hotel phone number is 909-937-0900.

INTRODUCING UNDEFEATED HEAVYWEIGHT JOHN LENNOX

CARTERET, NEW JERSEY (August 31, 2011)—Today’s Heavyweight division is always looking for a new star. Many have come from different countries; they come in all sizes and have vastly different personalities.

Enter John Lennox.

The Carteret, New Jersey native has all the potential to be one of the best Heavyweight prospects In the United States.

It all started over a decade ago when Lennox started boxing but not for competition but to stay in shape for other sports.

Lennox played Football, Baseball and Basketball in High School for which he played football and became an All-American Linebacker at Montclair St.

Lennox then played Professional for Lexington in the Arena League.

“I boxed to stay in shape for football”, said Lennox.

“After football, I had a brief amateur career and I was ready for the professional ranks.”

“My trainer Charles Thomas thought it was time and we went pro”

Lennox turned pro on November 19th, 2008 with a third round stoppage over Ricardo Cuffee at The Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, New Jersey.

Lennox then racked up two more wins to run his ledger to 3-0.

Then Lennox took a twenty-five month layoff that was not to his own doing.

“I had trouble getting fights and almost was ready to quit.”

Lennox then hooked up with manager Rich Masini.

“I see a lot of potential in John. He is a natural athlete and he has the heart of a lion”, said Masini.

Lennox came back from his break with a disqualification victory over Kareem Wilson on June 22nd, 2011 at The Robert Treat.

Lennox then fought two more times in just over a month as he stopped Donnie Crawford on July 9th at part of the Paul Williams – Erislandy Lara HBO undercard in Atlantic City and in Lennox’ last bout, Lennox stopped Jason Pauley in round two of their fight on July 29th in Philadelphia.

Lennox has started a unique training regimen called Hypoxic Training.

It is a method that replicates training at the highest of altitudes.

“The company is called Advanced Altitude 365 and I can feel after every session the difference that it has started to make. I already feel stronger and my body is in much better shape since I started this”, said Lennox.

Advance Altitude was founded and owned by Don Carmody.

“John is looking better with every fight and with his team and the way he trains, I feel he can be the best heavyweight to come out of New Jersey”, said Masini.

Lennox will put his perfect record on the line when he returns to the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark on Wednesday night September 14th.

“STAR POWER: Mayweather vs. Ortiz” At The Intersection Of The Boxing Biz And Show Biz

August 31, 2011 by GFL · Leave a Comment

Las Vegas (August 31) – As we near the September 17 mega-event “STAR POWER: Mayweather vs. Ortiz” emanating from both the boxing capital of the world, Las Vegas, and the celebrity capital of the world, Los Angeles, the connection between the squared circle and the silver screen comes even more into focus. This fight card is called “STAR POWER” and the eight fighters featured on the HBO Pay-Per-View® televised event carry on the proud tradition of fighters rubbing elbows with Hollywood’s elite, romancing stunning starlets and flashing smiles that can make female fans’ knees buckle.

Atop the bill is Mayweather, who rocketed to A-list celebrity status when he competed on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars in 2007. Claiming rapper and actor 50 Cent as one of his closest friends, Mayweather’s fights regular draw ringside observers that include the likes of big name stars such as Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Jay-Z and Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Sean Puffy Combs, Denzel Washington as well as top dollar athletes in Tiger Woods, David Beckham, Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley. You name them, he pulls them.

Headlining the L.A. portion of the show is Canelo Alvarez, who was at one time engaged to model/actress/sports reporter Marisol Gonzalez. Alvarez’s opponent is Alfonso Gomez who rose to fame with Sylvester Stallone and Sugar Ray Leonard by his side on the inaugural season of NBC’s The Contender and, playing in the hip-hop/rock band Hy3rid, has straddled the fence between boxing and the entertainment industry ever since.

Canelo brings the added element of pop-idol-like appeal among female fight fans; crossing over to sex symbol status like no boxer has since Oscar De La Hoya (who just happens to be the promoter of “STAR POWER”). Once in a generation, if that, a fighter comes along who makes the girls shriek like something out of Beatles concert. Alvarez possesses that quality.

However, Canelo is far from the only fighter on this card with a fan base that includes the fairer sex. Mayweather’s sparkling smile has caught the eye of the ladies since he rose to fame in his late teens, Ortiz has drawn comparisons to De La Hoya himself because of his good looks and the fighters who will open the pay-per-view broadcast, Jessie Vargas and Josesito Lopez, both have Latino heartthrob potential.

Any of these fighters might look natural with starlets on their arms, which would mean they’d be carrying on a proud tradition that goes all the way back to 19th century heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan, who famously dated voluptuous chorus girl Ann Livingston. Other heavyweight champs made it more official: Jack Dempsey married movie star Estelle Taylor, Max Schmeling wed actress Anny Ondra and more recently, Mike Tyson was briefly, and tempestuously, married to actress Robin Givens. The latest boxing/Hollywood heavyweight couple featured Wladimir Klitschko and Heroes star Hayden Panettiere, who ended their two-year relationship just a few months ago.

Such romances aren’t limited only to the heavyweight fighters. Two of the most notable boxer-celebrity unions in history involved middleweight champs: Marcel Cerdan with French singer and cultural icon Edith Piaf and Gorilla Jones with actress and sex symbol Mae West.

For all of the star fighters who’ve romanced in Hollywood circles, countless more have “bromanced” in those circles. Former light heavyweight champ Jose Torres was best friends with Ryan O’Neal (who starred in the 1979 boxing movie The Main Event). Sugar Ray Leonard palled around with many of Hollywood’s heavy hitters and famously told Michael J. Fox, before anyone else, that he intended to come out of retirement and fight Marvin Hagler. Tyson is now an actor of sorts himself, appearing in The Hangover and The Hangover 2, but long before that, he ran with many of the biggest names in television, film and music. In fact, his friendship with Tupac Shakur was the subject of a 2010 documentary entitled One Night In Vegas.

The connections between the worlds of boxing and entertainment are numerous, and they will be on display again when “STAR POWER” spans the distance from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Many of Tinseltown’s top draws will be seated ringside at both MGM Grand and STAPLES Center. So much so that the ring announcers at the venues will likely spend as much time introducing the celebrities as they do the fighters.

HBO analyst Larry Merchant has famously referred to boxing as “the theater of the unexpected.” What is not unexpected is that boxing will provide great theater, and attract the most famous names and faces from the celebrity world.

Shaw Congratulates “Real Deal” for Successful Defense

Gary Shaw of Gary Shaw Productions wishes to congratulate IBF middleweight champion Daniel “The Real Deal” Geale (26-1, 15 KOs) for making his first successful title defense, a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over Miami via Nigeria’s Eromosele Albert (24-5-1, 12 KOs) on Wednesday night.

Fighting on his home turf at the Derwent Entertainment Centre in Tasmania, Australia, Geale showed tremendous ring generalship by out-boxing and out-speeding his determined challenger. The judges’ scores were 116-112, 117-111 and 119-109.

In front of more than 5,000 electrified fans, the wildly popular Geale entered the ring to a song written about him in his honour. Geale won the belt from Germany’s Sebastian Sylvester last May.

“Tonight saw the birth of a new Australian superstar,” said an elated Shaw, post-fight. “Daniel’s dominance is proof he is ready for anyone in the world. He’s worked hard to become the fighter he is and he’s been expertly brought along by Garrie Fransisco and Bill Tracy as his managers and Graham Shaw as his trainer. It’s a regional success story that is now going global and I’m proud to be his promoter.”

Shaw says that Geale suffered an injury to his right hand and will take some time off to heal before announcing his next move.
