TEAM DURAN TO LOOK INTO GONZALES DECISION

PATERSON, NJ (October 31, 2011)—This past Friday night, Middleweight Ossie Duran took on undefeated Brandon Gonzales in the nationally televised main event on Sho Box: The New Generation.

The fight, which took place in Duran’s home state of New Jersey, was a good fight with both combatants fighting hard.

As the fight wore on, it became clear that Duran was imposing his will his effective jab that set up a diverse selection of landed punches.

When the final bell rang, to the dismay of Duran and his team at Gulfstream Promotions, it was announced that Gonzales had taken the fight by split decision.

With that decision Gulfstream has decided to ask the New Jersey Boxing Commission to take a look at the tape to see what they thought of the decision.

“We feel Ossie didn’t get a well deserved decision”, said advisor to Duran Vinny LaManna.

“We just want the Commission to look at all things. Sitting ringside we thought Ossie won six rounds to two no question.”

“Watching the tape of the SHOWTIME broadcast only confirmed what everyone at ringside saw. Ossie won the fight. A reputable guy like SHOWTIME analyst Steve Farhood had Ossie winning the fight so I am not alone in what we saw”

“I want to thank Tom Brown and Goossen Tutor for giving Ossie the opportunity. At the end of the day, Ossie trained so hard and we had been in discussions for some major things with Ossie had he won this bout. Because of what we feel is a bad decision, those are on hold and keeps Ossie from his dream of fighting for a world title.”

No Cancun Vacation for Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin

Fighting Scotsman Craig McEwan Saturday night on HBO

LOS ANGELES (October 31, 2011) – Undefeated middleweight contender Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (25-0, 19 KOs) breaks his Los Angeles training camp Wednesday to depart for Cancun, not for a vacation but to fight live on HBO for the first time, Saturday night against Scottish southpaw Craig McEwan (19-1, 10 KOs) in Cancun, Mexico.

Quillin-McEwan is the co-feature on a Golden Boy Promotions card headlined by Alfredo Angulo vs. James Kirkland.

“I took off about a week after my last fight and have been training ever since, even after working with Team USA at the Olympic Team training camp in Colorado Springs, during the short time I was back in New York City,” Quillin said. “It’s been a great camp. My old buddy from Brooklyn, Sechew Powell, has been here with me in Los Angeles. We didn’t spar but, almost equally important; we talked a lot of boxing. He told me nothing else matters, to just focus on the biggest fight of my life. He’s been very supportive and it was fantastic having a friend like him around during camp. He kept me up in this atmosphere.

“My mother cooked for me and my manager, John Seip, came out to visit me. Freddie Roach had a lot of input into my training and game plan for this fight. He won’t be in my corner, though, because he’s with Manny Pacquiao getting ready for his fight a week after mine. I’ll be in good hands once again with trainer Eric Brown. I’m only fighting one night without Freddie, just one night, but Freddie, Eric and Brad work as a team for the ‘Chocolate Factory.’ We trust and believe in each other in order to get the maximum out of each workout.”

Quillin’s average week during his six-week training camp included sparring at Roach’s famed Wild Card Gym in Hollywood on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, as well as strength-and-conditioning work Tuesday and Thursday with coach Brad Bose at Anatomi in Santa Monica, along with daily runs (no less than 4 miles), including one (5-8 miles) strictly dedicated to hill work.

The 28-year-old Quillin, presently rated No. 7 by the World Boxing Association, sparred with Vanes Mirtirosyan, Ronson Frank, Michael Medina and Malic Basille. “I only sparred with Vanes a little because he was getting ready for his fight this past weekend,” Quillin remarked. “Ronson gave me some good rounds and Basille’s a good lefty. I was doing 12 rounds with 3-4 different guys rotating in and out. In addition to sparring at Wild Card, I also did a lot of pads, heavy bag, and other work there on my technique and strategy for this fight. I’ve been working on a machine that’s like a stair climber but you use your legs and arms. One hundred steps a minute is great for my wind. The Vortex is a torture machine Brad has for punch resistance, 100 punches in 30 seconds, and then 100 punches going side to side. Basically, it’s 90 minutes of straight pain.”

McEwan used to be trained by Roach at Wild Card Gym and that knowledge of his opponent is invaluable to “Kid Chocolate” and his team. “I know McEwan is going to put up a hard, tough fight,” Quillin continued. “I’m mentally prepared to take it up another notch. I know I’ve put in a lot of hard work for this fight and an impressive win against McEwan on HBO will get me closer to my ultimate goal of fighting for a world title fight.

“Freddie knows Craig. They were together for a few years and we have a solid game plan based on what Freddie knows. We sparred a few times. McEwan knows about me and my work ethic, but we know a lot more about him. He’s coming off of his only loss (stopped in 10th round by Andy Lee), so he’s fighting me with something to prove. I’ve always been able to adjust during a fight. I am prepared and will adjust against McEwan, doing whatever it takes to win and do it impressively.”

GET TO KNOW SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT EFRAIN ESQUIVIAS

October 31, 2011 by GFL · Leave a Comment

Orange, CA (October 31, 2011) – Thompson Boxing Promotions returns for the final
“New Blood” edition of 2011 this Friday, November 4th at the Doubletree Hotel in
Ontario, California. Super Bantamweight Efrain Esquivias (14-0, 9 KOs) returns
to the ring to face what promises to be his toughest fight to date.

Esquivias, who hails out of Carson, California, looks to impress fight fans as he
returns with an added zest to take on the veteran Fernando Beltran, Jr. (35-6-1,
19 KOs) of Culiacan, Mexico. The always-tough Beltran has taken the majority of
his fights the distance against class ‘A’ opposition as well as contending for
the IBF title in the featherweight division.

The Esquivias-Beltran fight is scheduled for 10-rounds and it will be for the vacant
NABF Super Bantamweight title.

Get to know Efrain Esquivias before he enters the ring in just under four days by
reading the Q&A session below.

Q: How is training going for your fight this Friday?

A: Excellent, I have been training really hard. I’m ready for the
fight.

Q: What have you been doing in particular to train for your
upcoming match?

A: I have been sparring with Abner Mares. Hitting the mitts,
speed bag and heavy bag. I have also been putting in my
roadwork. I know that I am going to have to adjust to
Beltran’s style but that won’t be a problem since I am used
to adjusting to all my opponents. In the fights that I went up
against southpaws (Gabriel Tolmajyan, Shawn Nichols and
Frank Gutierrez) I had to adjust to their styles but I did it
easily because I am good at switching it up on a dime
so my opponents get confused. Since Beltran is a
southpaw, I will look to handle him in the same manner.

There are a lot of southpaws that go right handed and, just
like them, I feel comfortable when I switch to southpaw
stance.

Q: What do you know about your opponent?

A: I am not really familiar with Beltran but I don’t mind that
since I trust my boxing ability and know that I am skilled.

Q: How does it feel to fight for a title that might propel you to
bigger things in the future?

A: I’m excited to have another chance to fight for the
NABF title. My promoter has done a great job in giving me
the opportunity to do it over since I didn’t make the weight
limit in August against Ruiz and lost my shot to fight for the
belt. That is in the past, but I know that I never want to have
that feeling to beat a guy like Ruiz, have my hand
raised and not get to hold the belt. I might have a bright future
in boxing and I want to capitalize in every opportunity.

Tickets for “New Blood” are priced at $75, $45, and $30. They are available now
and may be purchased by calling 714-935-0900.

Also featured on the card as the co-main is Ontario’s Jonathan “Lil Thund’r” Arellano
(10-0-1, 2 KOs) who will face a foe that has yet to be determined.

Preceding match ups include Miguel Diaz (6-0, 3 KOs) who returns from Allentown,
PA to face off show in six round super flyweight clash agianst Felipe Castañeda
(6-2-1, 3 KOs) of El Paso, TX and female junior flyweight Sindy Amador (5-0) who
will take on Blanca Raymundo (0-4) in a much anticpated rematch.

Bouts subject to change. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the first bell rings at 7:45
pm. The Doubletree Hotel is located at 222 North Vineyard Avenue in Ontario. The
hotel phone number is 909-937-0900.

Co-Feature Added To Nov. 5 Lucian Bute-Glen Johnson Telecast Featuring Rising Canadian Prospect Pier-Olivier Côté Against Jorge Luis Teron

Live on SHOWTIME® at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast)

NEW YORK (Oct. 31, 2011) – Rising Canadian junior welterweight star Pier-Olivier Côté will take on Jorge Luis Teron in a 12-round co-featured bout on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday, Nov. 5, from the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada, live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

In the SHOWTIME main event, undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion Lucian Bute will make the ninth defense of his title against ageless former world light heavyweight champion Glen “The Road Warrior’’ Johnson.

The 27-year-old Côté (17-0, 11 KOs), of Quebec City, Canada, is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Pedro Navarrete this past July in Romania and has won four out of his last five contests via knockout. In May, Côté fought on the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley undercard and scored a fourth round technical knockout over Aris Ambriz. Born in Colombia and adopted by a Quebec couple at the age of two, Côté didn’t start boxing until he was 20 years old. As an amateur, he had 65 wins and was a Golden Gloves and Canadian amateur champion. The hard-hitting prospect will face his toughest test to date in Teron, a former blue-chip prospect coming out of New York City.

“I’m extremely happy to fight on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. It’s a real honor for me to be in action in front of my hometown fans for my first international belt. To win the title on SHOWTIME would be amazing,” said Côté, who will battle Teron for the vacant IBF Inter-Continental light welterweight title. “I want to thank my promoter InterBox and also SHOWTIME for giving me this opportunity. Although I don’t feel any added pressure, I really want to turn in a dominant performance on Nov. 5.”

“This is a major step up for Pier-Olivier on Nov. 5,” said InterBox president Jean Bedard. “Not only is he facing the most dangerous opponent of his young career, but he will be doing so in front of a sold-out arena on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. It doesn’t get any better than this. He now has a much broader platform and it is up to him to deliver the performance of his life. I would like to thank our partners at SHOWTIME for giving us this incredible opportunity. This would not be possible without their precious collaboration.”

Teron (25-2-1, 17 KOs), of the Bronx, New York, is coming off a second-round victory over Jose Luis Soto Karass in March. The 26-year-old owns a victory over former world title challenger Michael Lozada and was a three-time Golden Gloves champion. The only blemishes on his record are a knockout loss to current World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champ Brandon Rios in 2010 and a majority decision loss to then-38-year-old veteran Aldo Valtierra in 2008. Teron avenged the loss with a unanimous decision victory over Valtierra just five months later.

The event is promoted by Interbox, DiBella Entertainment and Warriors Boxing.

Steve Albert will call the action with Al Bernstein and Antonio Tarver providing color commentary and Jim Gray serving as ringside reporter. David Dinkins Jr. is the executive producer of SHOWTIME Sports with Ray Smaltz producing and Bob Dunphy directing.

World Boxing Champion John ‘The Quietman’ Ruiz Subject of Children’s Book ‘Hooks & Jabs’

MEDFORD, Mass. (October 31, 2011) – Two-time World Boxing Association (”WBA”) heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz is the subject of a bi-lingual, children’s book, Hooks & Jabs, which was written by Jose-Gabriel Almeida and illustrated by Jan Michaelsy.

Ruiz, who is the first and only Hispanic Heavyweight Champion of the World, wanted to tell his story; detailing the overwhelming odds he conquered to become world champion, in order to inspire children, particularly Hispanics, at an early age.

Ruiz has lived by the credo, “Follow Your Dreams,” fighting his way out of a housing project in Chelsea, Massachusetts to capture one of the most prestigious individual awards in sports.

“I wanted to give kids a sense that, if they believe in themselves, they can aim high and achieve their goals,” Ruiz explained. “I wanted to send this message in a way that fascinated kids. I first pitched this idea to Gladys Rosa, a personal friend who has worked in public relations with some of the biggest names in boxing for many years. I met Jose 10 years ago at a press conference and we’ve remained friends ever since. He has written several children’s books and is a sports fanatic.

“We sent emails back and forth to each other about different scenarios until we came up with this version of Hooks & Jabs. I am Puerto Rican and have a large Hispanic following, which is I why I insisted that the book was published in a bilingual format. I wanted to reach kids from my culture. As a started researching publishing houses, I soon realized that it’s an over saturated process with a lot of red tape. I didn’t want to deal with publishing people who had different points of view about how my story had to be told, so I decided to self-publish my book, and I’m very glad I did. I’m very proud of this project because it’s 100-percent real. This is my story, my book, and I own all rights.”

Ruiz has retired from the ring but remains tied to boxing as an owner/chief instructor of recently opened Quietman Sports Gym, inside of Gold’s Gym in Medford (4000 Mystic Valley Parkway), which is a suburb of Boston and only a few miles from where John grew-up in Chelsea.

Quietman Sports Gym is a full-contact gym, featuring a boxing ring as well as a cage for MMA, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai fighting. The gym also offers boxing and full-contact fighting classes, personal and semi-private instruction, self defense classes, and white collar boxing.

Future plans call for Quietman Sports Gym to become a sanctioned USA Boxing gym, where John plans to develop future Olympians. Ruiz also wants to become a boxing and MMA promoter – professional and amateur – and he has already started a boxing consulting agency, Quietman Sports, along with his longtime attorney and advisor, Boston Attorney Anthony M. Cardinale.

The 39-year-old Ruiz, who lives in Las Vegas and Chelsea, retired with a professional record of 44-9-1 (30 KOs), including 12 world title fights.

Undefeated light welterweight prospect Levan Ghvamichava ‘The Wolf’ already hunting champions

CORK, Ireland (October 30, 20011) – One of the hottest prospects in boxing, light welterweight phenom Levan ‘The Wolf’ Ghvamichava, tore apart former European and Italian champion Giuseppe “The End” Lauri (52-9, 31 KOs) en route to a second-round victory by technical knockout last Friday night in front of an excited, packed crowd at Wishaw, Scotland.

“The Wolf,” who is already rated No. 66 by Box Rec after only six pro fights, dropped Lauri three times before the referee jumped between them in the second round to rescue the courageous Italian in the biggest upset loss of his 61-fight pro career.

It took former world champion Ricky Hatton five rounds, and ex-European titlist Paul McCloskey 11, to stop the rugged Hungary native Lauri who lives in Italy.

“He has devastating punching power in both hands and has the best reflexes and speed I have ever seen,” Lauri said after his fight against Levan.

Initially floored by a straight right, left hook combination in the opening round, Lauri managed to beat the count, rising at nine, only to be dropped once more in round one. “The Wolf” calmly stalked his prey before finishing his attack in the second round

Lauri was visibly shaken and surprised by the power of Ghvamichava, the spectacular Georgian power puncher who now lives in Belfast, Ireland, where he’s trained by the masterful father-and-son duo of Paul and Sean McCullagh.

“It has been almost impossible to match Levan because the word is already out that he is a multi-talented fighter with devastating punching power,” Ghvamichava’s manager, Irishman Gary Hyde, noted. “It will even be harder now but we don’t need to build-up this kid fighting journeymen. He is ready to fight anyone in the world at 140 pounds. Once he gets a little more professional experience, he will be challenging current European champion Denis Shafikov, from Russia, who needed eight rounds to stop Lauri.

“I am delighted with Levan’s explosive performance against a good experienced opponent such as Lauri, especially considering ‘The Wolf,’ who is 26 years old, only made his pro debut this past January. Few, if any, fighters with six fights are rated higher than Levan.”

American boxing fans will soon have an opportunity to watch Ghvamichava in action. His U. S. sports visa has been approved and plans call for him to make his American debut before the end of this year.

Hyde, president of Nowhere To Hyde, also manages WBA Interim Super Bantamweight Champion Guillermo “The Jackal” Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KOs), former European super bantamweight king and world title challenger Willie “Big Bang” Casey (12-1, 8 KOs), undefeated British welterweight prospect Mark Heffron and light middleweight “Wealthy” Dee Walsh (1-0).

Povetkin replies to Fury

WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin (22-0, 16 KOs) has laughed off the comments from Tyson Fury (16-0, 11 KOs), who most recently claimed he was ready to “take Povetkin out.” The 32-year-old Russian makes a first defence of his title at Helsinki´s renowned Hartwall Areena on December 3, taking on tough American challenger Cedric Boswell (35-1, 26 KOs). Povetkin was amused by Fury´s remarks. “I am ready to defend my belt against every challenger out there,” he stated. “But I must admit I am not overly scared by comments from someone whose biggest hit to date has been a Youtube video where he punches himself in the face. Right now all my focus is on Cedric Boswell.”

Promoter Kalle Sauerland added: “We would love to make that fight and I had offered them the December date but they didn’t seem to fancy it too much so perhaps now we can discuss next spring. First Alexander needs to take care of a very tough challenger in Cedric Boswell.”

The bout was a scheduled four round Featherweight bout. Zarazua caught Flores with a straight right and followed with a perfect left hook that sent Flores down. Flores got to his feet but was wobbly and the fight was waved off.

Zarazua, 125 1/2 lbs id 1-0 with one knockout. Flores, 125 lbs is 0-3

IZW’S MONSTERS BASH BATTLE ROYAL TAKES CENTER STAGE

Impact Zone Wrestling (IZW) – Halloween Hangover

Saturday November 5, 2011 @ 7pm (ET)

Impact Arena in Lawton, Oklahoma

Live on the GFL Combat Sports Network at GFL.tv

MONSTERS BASH BATTLE ROYAL TAKES CENTER STAGE

Impact Zone Wrestling (IZW) returns on November 5 with the Fall Classic Halloween Hangover LIVE on the GFL Combat Sports Network at GFL.tv.  The stacked event comes from the Impact Arena in Lawton, Oklahoma, the home base of operations for IZW.   If you can’t be in the arena you can still watch it live online through the GFL Combat Sports Network at GFL.tv.  Headlining the event is the annual Monsters Bash Battle Royal.

The rules are simple; every member of the IZW roster (except the Heavyweight Champion) is entered in this match.  The winner gets a future title shot for the World IZW Heavyweight Championship.  For wrestlers looking to break out of the pack, this is the single most important match of the year.  As history has shown, every winner of the Monsters Bash has gone on to win the IZW Heavyweight Title.  This is the one match guaranteed to springboard a wrestler’s career.

Last year, Jermaine Johnson won it all, and when the opportunity came for him to challenge for the World Title, he made the most of it and defeated “The Real Deal” Aaron Neil for the Heavyweight Championship less than a month after winning the Monsters Bash.  It’s a title that Johnson has defended for almost a year.

In 2009, it was the 325 lb behemoth “The Hate Machine” John O’Malley who won the Monsters Bash and punched in his ticket by defeating the most decorated World Champion in IZW history, Aaron Neil, for the Heavyweight Championship.

Winning the Monsters Bash Battle Royal not only gives the winner an automatic title shot but it also gives the victor an unbreakable spirit and will to win that is hard to defeat inside the IZW ring.  History has shown, the Monsters Bash is just as much as psychological boost for an athlete’s career as anything else, because coming off of a victory where you defeat the whole roster gives a wrestler an incredible grit and determination that is hard for even the champion to overcome when the two lock up.

Who is going to win it this year?  IZW fan favorite and multi-time Heavyweight Champion, Aaron Neil is the #1 entrant into the match.  It will be a tough road to ho, but if anyone can last the entire match and win it all, it’s Neil.  What about his opponent earlier in night, Brent Albright.  Could this be “The Shooter’s” coming out party?  Then there’s the teammate facet to contend with.  Will forces like Impact Inc. and the Old School Suckas use a divide and conquer game plan?  Will they converge on a single wrestler like a pack of jackals, team up on him and toss him over the top rope?  Or will it be every man for himself, because of what is at stake?  All these questions will be answered on November 5, as IZW presents Halloween Hangover, LIVE all around the world on pay-per-view only at GFL.tv.

The entire card reads as follows.

Main Event – The Monsters Bash Battle Royal

Heavyweight Championship – Jermaine Johnson (c) VS Double D

“The Shooter” Brent Albright VS “The Real Deal” Aaron Neil

Impact Division Championship – “Mr. Saturday Night” Michael Barry (c) VS “The Widow Maker” Angel Williams

Erica VS Starr VS A Mystery Woman

John O’Malley VS Bad Brad Michaels

Tag Team Championship – Old School Suckas (c) VS Nemesis

Don’t miss the most exciting iPPV of the fall when IZW presents Halloween Hangover on Saturday, November 5 on GFL.tv.  This star-studded event will also be streamed live to the GFL Roku Channel, iPhone, iPad and the latest Droid mobile devices and of course all Internet-connected computers.
