UFC WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION GEORGES ST-PIERRE OPENS UP ON THIS WEEKEND’S INTERIM TITLE FIGHT
Las Vegas, Nevada – On Saturday night, live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, elite welterweights Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit will collide for the interim UFC 170lbs championship.
UFC superstar Georges St-Pierre will be a very interested – and conflicted – ringside observer to the UFC 143 main event. ‘GSP’ has been the undisputed welterweight king since the spring of 2008, but knee injuries have forced him to withdraw from scheduled bouts with both Condit and Diaz and so he must sit on the sidelines while the pair stake a claim to his crown.
Expected to return to the Octagon™ perhaps as early as the summer, St-Pierre had this to say:
CHEERING FOR THE ENEMY
“I respect Carlos Condit, but I want Diaz to win. It will be a weird feeling, sitting at the Mandalay Bay wanting Nick Diaz to win. I want this fight with Diaz so badly, as badly as I wanted the title shot when I got down on my knees. I have never asked (UFC President) Dana White for anything, but I did ask to fightNick Diaz. I was (crushed) when I had to pull out of this weekend’s fight hurt, but I am determined to get back to the Octagon as soon as possible to fightthis guy. He needs to hold up his part and beat Carlos Condit on Saturday to make this fight happen.
ON HIS FEARS CONDIT WILL WIN
“I am very nervous that Carlos Condit will win on Saturday night, and that I won’t be able to fight Nick Diaz this summer. Carlos Condit is a very good fighter, he can strike, he is aggressive and he has submissions. He has been very impressive and is the type of fighter who gets better and better the more confident hegets.
I am not personal friends with him but I know him a little and he’s a great person. I know a lot of people who know him well because we train with the same people, but I have only spoken with him a few times. He is a true mixed martial artist. I feel bad, it is weird that I want him to lose, but I have never wanted to fight anyone as much as I want to fight Diaz.”
ON DANA WHITE’S COMMENT THAT GSP ‘HATES’ DIAZ
“I don’t truly hate him as a person. I don’t know that he is a bad guy, but I hate what he brings to the sport with the disrespect and the unprofessional things he says and does. It is sort of a professional hatred. He has been nothing but disrespectful and arrogant towards me. During UFC 137 (week) I felt like I had to walk around Las Vegas with my fists ready (to punch Diaz) because every time I came across him he wanted to fight there and then. Every time the elevator opened (in the hotel) I needed to be ready to fight in case he stepped in. I was on edge all week. This guy is crazy.
I am used to hearing (smack) talk from opponents, Matt Serra did it, Dan Hardy did it, and Josh Koscheck did it, but with Diaz he has taken it to another level. He and his coach (Cesar Gracie) have called me a coward and tried to disrespect myaccomplishments.
All that has done though is make me determined to beat him up. He will bring out the best in me, I will be 100% focused, like a bomb-expert defusing a time bomb. When my back is against the wall and I have no choice but to win, when I cannot lose to this person under any cost, that is when I am most dangerous.
Also, as champion, I believe Diaz deserves the fight for the title. Style-wise, he is a very tough match for me and the fans deserve to see the fight they really want to see.”
ON WHETHER THE ‘INTERIM’ CHAMP WILL BE THE REAL CHAMP
“The way I see it, I am not the champion anymore on Saturday night. I have not fought since April, against my will, but I understand the champion must fight. Youhave to put the belt on the line in order to call yourself champion, the best in the world. Right now I am not the best in the world, I am injured. The winner of this fight on Saturday will be more than just the new No.1 contender, but he won’t be the new champion either. The winner of this fight will have to beat me to become the true world champion and I will have to beat the winner of this fight in order to call myself the best in the world again.
I like the format where the winner of this fight will have to fight me and I have to fight the winner to truly become the UFC champion. That is what the UFC is about, that is competition. This is fair to all of us, we have to beat each other to be the undisputed champion.”
ON DIAZ’S DOMINATING WIN OVER BJ PENN
“He was very impressive. Nick Diaz’s boxing is very strong; he could be the best boxer in the UFC. I don’t want to be seen to be advising any other fighter how to win a fight, but if Diaz does what he does best then he should win this fight on Saturday. It is a very close fight though.”
ON HIS RIGHT KNEE INJURY AND REHAB
“I am ahead of schedule. I can already train and even kick but I am remaining calm and not rushing. I won’t train properly until July, it is a matter of discipline not to force my knee to go harder than it can heal. No athlete wants to sit on thesidelines, especially when you are the champion and you must watch two others fight for the interim championship belt. I will watch on Saturday and go home very motivated to rehab on Monday morning but I must be disciplined and I must continue to rehab at the pace I am doing.”

UNDEFEATED FEATHERWEIGHT JERRY “THE CORPUS CHRISTI KID” BELMONTES NOW A PROMOTIONAL FREE AGENT
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (JANUARY 31, 2012)–15-0(5KO’s) Featherweight Jerry Belmontes is now a promotional Free Agent. Belmontes, of Corpus Christie, Texas, gained his freedom from Marines Promotions after an ugly one -year year dispute between promoter Julio Marines and manager Adrian Clark which left Jerry out of the ring for nine months.
Clark and Belmontes both are overjoyed with the release but realize that the free agent process will be difficult and stressful. “The year dispute with Marines Promotions was tough but I imagine the free agency process will be more difficult than what we endured with Julio” said Clark.
I’ll work to get Jerry a deal that makes the most sense down the road” Clark said. A two-plus year age gap separates the two but Belmontes at 22 believes in Clark, 25 and his ability to get things done.
“He stuck by me the whole way thru:, Said Belmontes.
Even when things looked really bad he continued to work and eventually got me free. As happy as I am, I’m just ready to fight”
Belmontes has wins over the likes of Tommy Atencio (4-1) and Gil Garcia (2-0) and is coming off a six round unanimous decision over Justo Vallecillo last June 24th.
The two will put their heads together and look to sign with a promotional company soon.
SUPERBRAWLS CO-MAIN EVENT: ‘Kid Blast’ Barthelemy vs. Hylon Williams Jr.
Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (14-0, 11 KOs) will not be in for an easy night when he steps in the ring on February 3 against fellow undefeated Hylon Williams Jr. (15-0, 3 KOs).
The two up-and-coming warriors will meet in the eight-round co-main event of the ESPN Friday Night Fights-televised Warriors Boxing and Sampson Boxing event entitled “Superbrawls” this Friday (February 3), in the Dallas Events Center at the Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel in Las Vegas.
Superbrawls will be topped by a 10-round light heavyweight main event between Colombian powerhouse Edison “Pantera” Miranda and South Africa’s WBC #6, WBA #13, and WBO #14-rated Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba, and also feature a battle of unbeaten heavyweight prospects Magomed Abdusalamov (12-0, 12 KOs) Moscow, Russia, and Cuba’s Pedro Rodriguez (8-0, 6 KOs).
Standing an amazing 5′ 11″ the towering Barthelemy had an impressive amateur career, competing in 200 fights and earning the Cuban junior national championship before defecting to the United States. He is coming off a knockout victory over Mexican Alejandro Barrera on the Lucian Bute-Glenn Johnson undercard in Quebec City, Canada in November.
With his relentlessly aggressive style, the 25-year-old Cuban power puncher has proven to be one of the most exiting up-and-comers in the game.
In Hylon Williams Jr., he will face his biggest test since turning professional in August 2009.
21-year-old Hylon Williams Jr. will also be in with the best opponent of his career, so far.
Originally from Houston, Williams is blessed with blazing hand speed and incredible balance. He was a highly decorated amateur who went 145-20 and won several national and international tournaments.
The match-up will be a classic boxer vs. puncher duel and in the end, SOMEONE’S 0 MUST GO!!!

Andre Ward wins Fighter of the Year Award
Dan Rafael of espn.com has confirmed that WBA/WBC Super Middleweight champion ANdre ward has been named the 2011 Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA)
“I want to thank God for giving me the strength to put in the work year after year to get to this point. I also want to thank my manager, James Prince, my promoters Antonio Leonard and Dan Goossen, everyone who is a part of Team Ward, as well as all of my family, friends, and loyal fans who have been behind me all these years,” Ward, 27, of Oakland, Calif., said. “This award is just as much for them as it is for me.
“Even in the midst of receiving this tremendous award, Team Ward is not going to let up. In 2012 and beyond we’re going to push forward and, God-willing, we can be considered for these awards every year. It’s easy to get comfortable at a time like this, but I can assure everybody that I’m going to continue to put in the work to be the best that I can be. I’m going to stay humble, keep God first and, with that, the best is yet to come.
Ward, who was also named ESPN.com fighter of the year, won the award over nominees Nonito Donaire, Wladimir Klitschko, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“I’m very proud of all of what he has accomplished since the day we signed him,” said Goossen, who has promoted Ward for his entire career. “He’s been a joy to work with and a tremendous fighter inside the ring. It’s been a great ride, but the irony of it all is I think we’ve just begun. There’s a lot more to accomplish and showcase with Andre. You don’t have an athlete like this that comes around too often in the history of our sport. He has the fabric and makeup of the great ones. I just think he’s headed for greatness.”
Ward will have familiar company when he receives his award. Virgil Hunter, who has trained Ward since he picked up gloves as a boy, won the Futch award for trainer of the year.
“I’m very happy for my trainer and Godfather, Virgil, for winning this prestigious award,” Ward said. “I’m probably more excited for him than I am for myself. I’ve always wanted him to win this award because he is one of the hardest working trainers in the game.”
Said Goossen, “As proud of Andre as I am, I am equally proud to see Virgil get something I believe he is due. He’s a different breed of trainer. From the fundamentals to the mental aspect, he is right there with the best.”
Junior middleweights Delvin Rodriguez and Pawel Wolak will share the Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier award for fight of the year. Their first bout, which headlined on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” on July 15 at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, was a rousing all-action slugfest that ended in a majority draw. Many view it as the best fight in the history of “Friday Night Fights” and it will be remembered as an intense battle during which Wolak fought through massive swelling that closed his right eye.
Berto injures arm; rematch with Ortiz in Jeopardy

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Former two-time Welterweight champion Andre Berto injured his arm in training today which now puts in doubt his February 11th rematch with former champion Victor Ortiz.
“He had to go the hospital to get it checked out and he is hurt. I know the fight is in jeopardy of not happening on that date. It didn’t sound good,” one source said.
On whether the fight would be postponed, another source said, “When one of the guys in the fight is in the hospital for an arm injury two weeks before the fight, that is bad news.
Cory Spinks, B.J. Flores Win in Springfield, Mo.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—Five-time world champion Cory Spinks won a unanimous decision over Sechew Powell on Saturday at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield, Mo., in an elimination bout to determine the IBF junior middleweight No. 1 ranking, and hometown cruiserweight B.J. Flores moved closer to a world title match by stopping Colombian veteran Hugo Pineda.
Spinks (39-6, 11 KOs), a former undisputed welterweight champion and subsequent two-time IBF junior middleweight champion, had been thought by some to be near the end of his career after losing the IBF 154-pound crown to Cornelius “K9” Bundrage in 2010.
Spinks rededicated himself to the sport but was still the underdog entering the ring this past weekend to face Powell (26-3, 15 KOs), the IBF No. 5-ranked contender. Spinks swept all three judges’ scorecards 116-112 and 115-113, twice.
“I was in perfect condition and felt like I could do anything I wanted during the fight,” Spinks said. “Powell thought he was going to pressure me, that I would be old and run from him. I think he was surprised when I stood toe to toe with him and was the one bringing the pressure.
“He became more aggressive in rounds six and seven, and a local reporter wrote that I was in trouble, but Powell didn’t give me anything I couldn’t handle. I knew he was swinging for the fences in those rounds, so I let him go because I wasn’t going anywhere.”
Spinks also noted that he feels like a young fighter.
“I’m only 33 years old, I feel like new money right now,” Spinks said. “I performed well in this fight, my second match with new manager Scott Hirsch and trainer Anthony Ham. I’ve won five world titles, I have a name and I think I bring a lot to the table for a marquee name, a world championship fight or both.”
Promoter Don King attended the fight and was impressed.
“Sechew Powell is a good, dangerous fighter, and certainly no light touch for Cory,” King said. “I was proud of him on Saturday night.
“When he trains right and applies himself to the sport both mentally and physically, there is no question he poses a significant threat to anyone at or near 154 pounds.”
Trainer Anthony Ham was pleased with Spinks’ performance as well.
“Cory was in the best shape of his life,” Ham said. “He dominated the fight with his jab and right hook. This is our second fight together, and I feel like Cory has won 20 of the 22 rounds since we teamed up. I think he will be even better in his next fight.”
Manager Scott Hirsch said he had a reason for wanting to work with Spinks.
“I felt the reports a few years ago of Cory’s demise were greatly exaggerated,” Hirsch said. “I agreed to work with him because I felt he was just too good and had a lot left in his tank. He proved me right on Saturday against one of the best fighters in his division. The Spinks Jinx is back and ready to wreak further havoc in boxing.”
Highly ranked cruiserweight B.J. Flores (27-1-1, 17 KOs) availed himself well against notable veteran Hugo Pineda (39-6-1, 28 KOs). Flores’ supporters from his hometown of Springfield, Mo., filled the historic Shrine Mosque, and Flores gave them what they came to see.
“I was calculated but aggressive in the first few rounds,” Flores said. “By the third, I knew where I was going to go. I cut him over the right eye in the second round with a left hook, and I floored him in the fourth. Every time I hit him I felt like I hurt him.
“I was going up and down with punches to the head and body, which confused him. Then I caught him with a good straight right hand for a knockdown in the fourth round. He barely made it up from that.”
Flores wobbled Pineda again in the fifth round beforePineda’s corner threw in the towel near the end of the sixth.
Promoter Don King liked what he saw in Springfield, Mo.
“I give B.J. a lot of credit,” King said. “He’s built a big following for himself in Springfield, and he gave the crowd a good show.
“I enjoyed the people in Springfield and B.J. wants big fights and a world title shot, so the Show Me State is definitely in the mix.”
“THE NOTORIOUS” TRAVIS PETERKIN REMAINS UNDEFEATED WITH UNANIMOUS DECISION—WATCH HIS FIGHT ON DEMAND ON GFL
CLICK TO ORDER THE FIGHT
New York (January 30, 2012) – This past Saturday at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York, Boxing360’s light heavyweight prospect, “The Notorious” Travis Peterkin (4-0, 3 KOs) remained undefeated, winning a unanimous decision with the scorecards reading 40-36 across the board.
After recording three consecutive first round knockouts to start of his career, Peterkin, who faced Steve Tyner (2-3-1, 2 KOs) in a four round bout, went the distance for the first time, dominating the action from the opening bell.
Peterkin who fights out of Brooklyn, NY went on to say, “It was defiantly a good win for me but I feel I could have done better. Tyner was a step up but I fought smart and came out with the victory. I’m healthy and I’m ready to go right into my next fight. I’m looking forward to seeing what Boixng360 has lined up for me. I’m excited about 2012.”
Trainer Bernard Peterkin said, “I feel it was a good victory for Travis. He hasn’t been past the first round in two years since the amateurs. He showed great poise versus a guy who shatters dreams for prospects. Travis is young and that four round experience is something he’s never experienced in 104 bouts as an amateur. He’s with the big boys now and we expect that.”
Boxing360 promoter Mario Yagobi was happy with the result stating, “Peterkin showed he can go rounds if need be. In this sport you can’t always knock everyone out early. The experience gained from this fight is great for Travis and I know he learned a few things in the process. I want to get him back in the ring as soon as possible.”
This bout was promoted by Boxing360 in association with the Turning Stone Resort & Casino. For more information please visit www.boxing360.com
