Alaska’s #1 MMA promotion returns to GFL as Alaska Fighting Championship presents “AFC 112” emanating from the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska on January 21. MMA fans, this pro/am card is stacked featuring the top up and coming prospects inside the state of Alaska. The card features a one-night tournament to crown the Light Heavyweight Championship and an AFC Bantamweight Title fight. AFC is the premier MMA organization in the Last Frontier State with several alums moving on to the UFC and AFC continues to produce high quality MMA events comparable to any regional organization across the U.S.
In the main event, it will be the finals of a 6-man 205 lb tournament. Chris Johnson (2-3) who previously fought at heavyweight and will come into the tournament with a size and strength advantage. Johnson will look to use his size to wear down whoever he faces in the opening bout. Johnson also has KO power in both hands and can end a fight with one punch. Jason Coomes (9-14) brings a wealth of experience into the cage and will be one of the most seasoned fighters in the tournament. Coomes will look to win quickly and preserve himself for the finals. Look for Croomes to get the fight to the mat and go for a submission. Jeremy Slinger, and Joe Fonoti (7-6), a former AFC Champion, round out the 4-man tournament. Slinger is a newcomer to AFC while Fonoti has already tasted gold and wants to establish himself as a true legend of AFC by winning this tournament and becoming a 2-time AFC Champion.
In an alternate bout, Hipa Fouvale (10-14) and Jeff Sanderson (1-0) tangle in the cage with the winner being able to fight in the finals should one of the winners in the other two bouts be injured and unable to compete. Fouvale is on a 2-fight win steak, both by first round stoppage and is looking to make it 3 in a row. Fouvale needs to be quick on the attack. Sanderson is a strong wrestler who finds himself already in the thick of things in AFC after only 1 pro fight. Sanderson is a blue chip prospect and a win over the durable Fouvale will skyrocket Sanderson into title contention sooner than later.
The AFC Bantamweight Title will be on the line when Champion Darren ‘Deathrow’ Snow (3-1) battles Johnny ‘The Cobra’ Taunton (3-2). Snow won the title in 2014 with a second round TKO and this will be his first title defense. Snow is an all-around fighter with wins coming via submission, and TKO. Look for Snow to mix up his attacks early and often. Taunton is riding a 2-fight winning streak and brings a strong striking game into the fight. He also is a solid wrestler who grinds his opponents down round after round.
