Order Event ––Guns-and-Hoses/2811

The Massachusetts State Police Boxing Team hosted “Guns & Hoses” a boxing event, which featured police against firefighters in the ring. Troopers and Corrections Officers also competed on this card that was for a good cause as donations were made to several charities including the Worcester County Food Bank and Veterans Inc., which provides emergency shelter services and other forms of assistance to homeless veterans in the Worcester area.

In the main event, in a 165lb bout, “Firefighter” Julio Padilla defeated “Firefighter” Evan Parker via decision. Padilla set the tone early by fighting from the middle of the ring and putting Parker against the ropes. Parker showed some solid counterpunching and his southpaw style connected with combos, both to the body and head, but Padilla continued to push the pace and set the tone as he fought from the middle of the ring and was first to the punch on most occasions. Later in the first round, Parker found his range from the outside and scored with some nice combos as Padilla used his aggression to push Parker up against the ropes. In round two, Parker wanted to keep his distance and land from the outside as his punches found their mark, while Padilla closed the distance and grappled with Parker and looked to score punches to the body. In the third round, Padilla went back to his first round form, landing blows from the outside and using his ring generalship to push Parker into the ropes and score from close range. Both fighters showed a ton of heart and skill as neither wavered in their attempt to score punches. In the end, Padilla’s workmanlike approach, where he dictated the pace of the fight and scored with a higher volume of punches proved to be the deciding factors in the bout.

In the co-main event, in the super heavyweight division, “Officer” Heath Cummings defeated “CO” Eric Gariepy via KO in the first round. Cummings closed the distance from the start of the bell and threw hook after hook, with a right hand getting through the defense of Gariepy and staggering him. The ref gave Gariepy a standing 8 count and when action resumed, Cummings unloaded with more hooks and uppercuts causing the ref to give another standing 8 to Gariepy. Cummings picked up right where he left off as continued to press Gariepy, connecting with several hard hooks. One right hand connected flush and knocked Gariepy against the ropes and that was enough for the ref to stop the fight.
