Walt “Big Ticket” Harris & Champions Freestyle Fight Team

It was the nasty hook heard around the world that put Anthony Hamilton to the ground. In 1:15 seconds into Round 1 at Superior Cage Combat 4 in Las Vegas on Feb. 16 the light at the end of the tunnel for “The Freight Train” was “Big Ticket”. Lights out to be exact.

The matchup– Anthony Hamilton – the rising star that is an 8:0 undefeated pro heavyweight from the world famous Jackson gym. Greg Jackson is a mixed martial arts trainer, who operates the Jackson’s MMA training camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jackson has trained many successful fighters, including current UFC welterweight champion Georges St.-Pierre and UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Sherdog.com reports that Jackson’s camp has a win percentage of 81%. Jackson has recently been reported in the news as being the corner man to Jon Jones at UFC 145. Greg Jackson has won 3 World MMA Awards. He won “Best Coach” and “Best Gym” in 2009 as well as “Coach of the Year” in 2010. Escorting Hamilton to the octagon was former UFC veteran Keith Jardine. In 2011, Jardine signed a deal with Strikeforce. He holds notable victories over the likes of Chuck Liddell, and Forrest Griffin. Pretty intimidating statistics.

His opponent was Walt “Big Ticket” Harris – a 3:1 pro MMA heavyweight from a tiny little gym located in Birmingham, Alabama. As an amateur, Walt had a 23:1 record. Escorting Walt to the octagon were his coaches – Coach Jon Dye and Coach Al Price of Champions Freestyle Fight Team. It was all over in less than 75 seconds. By way of KO – the victor Walt Harris.

How does a tiny little gym in Alabama rise to the same level of professional athletic competition as a world famous gym? How does a fighter go from small town Alabama to knocking out an undefeated Greg Jackson fighter?

By putting in a lot of hard work and time, and hard work, and dedication and did I mention hard work. There is no secret formula to success. It all boils down to coaching, training, preparation and according to Coach Dye “God’s gift of amazing athletic abilities”. All of which played a key role in Walt’s success. Other factors include studying fight footage of Hamiltons’ and identifying his weaknesses. Coach Dye studied video after video and analyzed his technique and realized that when Hamilton got fighters to the ground he would allow enough space to dig an underhook. According to Coach Dye “we worked on digging that underhook and getting back to our feet.” Getting back to his feet included having his teammates hold him down while Walt learned how to get back to his feet. One of his teammates; a former Linebacker from 2009 National Championship Alabama Crimson Tide, Eryk Anders. “I also noticed Hamilton threw a weak jab. I knew Walt was fast enough and good enough to pull it off and everything we worked on happened perfectly. Anthony jabbed and Walt threw it over the top just like we worked on”. Walt remembers hearing Coach Dye yell at him to watch the kicks and let his hands go. He did. A few seconds later Hamilton was down and out. Awarding Harris the “KO of the Night”.

While in Vegas, Walt and his coaches were at Randy Couture’s gym watching their pro’s practice. Coach Dye remembers thinking that as much talent as they have at that gym that he has just as much talent at his own gym in Birmingham. “I want every fighter to know that you don’t have to come from a Couture or Jackson gym to be a top fighter. No one from Alabama has ever knocked out an undefeated Jackson fighter until now and it’s a good feeling. The best feeling in the world is to take a guy that didn’t know how to fight and in 3 years time take him to Vegas and have him knock out a guy from one of the big name gyms. I told Walt what to do to win and it worked.” Just last year Walt signed with First Round Management, based in Miami, FL. IZW February 18 Review on GFL.tv

IZW presented another show for free with its ongoing television series on GFL.tv this past Saturday night, February 18, which can be viewed online here – http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Wrestling/Impact_Zone_Wrestling_Feb_18_2012/1380.  Coming off of Violent Valentine and heading into March Mayhem on March 17, IZW continues to throw down the gauntlet for great in ring action and feuds that have lit the Oklahoma territory and surrounding areas on fire.

The evening started with IZW Heavyweight Champion Jermaine Johnson and Aaron Neil face to face in the ring.  Both men agreed to do it “one more time” and the IZW Heavyweight Title will be on the line again at March Mayhem on March 17 as the top two wrestlers in the organization square off for the most coveted title in the region.  Kevin Morgan came out to confront both Johnson and Neil as he was unimpressed with the “lovefest” that was going on in front of him.  Morgan was ready to take on BOTH Johnson and Neil at the same time, until Shawn McHale and IZW Impact Division Champion Jordan Jacobs came out to the ring to slow things down.  McHale was made de facto commish by IZW Commissioner Brandon Bishop earlier in the day, and as such he made a match between Morgan and Johnson for later in the evening.  He also made a match with Neil versus Jacobs that kicked off the matches for the night.

Aaron Neil defeated Jordan Jacobs in a war of attrition in a non-title bout.  After some fast paced wrestling, Jacobs went up to the top rope to land a cross body, but Neil ducked the move and then executed a perfect Real Drill that left Jacobs motionless and gave Neil the pinfall.  It was a strong win for the 5-time IZW Heavyweight Champion against the current Impact Division Champion and gives Neil some momentum going into the next iPPV where he will face Jermaine Johnson for what could be the final time.

Next up, Erica defeated Kyra Maya who was accompanied by Bobby Starr.  Erica proved again that she is the dominant female wrestler in IZW and the Lady of Impact, with a solid victory over her arch nemesis, Starr’s right hand women.  Maya is a powerhouse and delivers the most devastating slams in the women’s division, but Erica used speed and guile to defeat Maya and her crony Bobby Starr.

Kevin Morgan defeated IZW Heavyweight Champion Jermaine Johnson by disqualification.  Johnson retains the title as he was not pinned or submitted.  The current Champion got everything thrown at him but the kitchen sink by Morgan who was hell bent on proving that he belongs in the title discussion.  Both men brawled in and out of the ring with the end coming when Morgan brought in the heavyweight title belt and tried to hit Johnson with it.  Johnson ducked out of the way and grabbed the belt himself and leveled Morgan with it getting the automatic disqualification call from the referee.  Johnson didn’t stop there as he hit Morgan once more with the belt and then went for the move a third time only to be press slammed down hard by Morgan.  Turnabout is fair play as Morgan gave Johnson another slam.  When it looked like Morgan would inflict more damage on Johnson’s lifeless body, Aaron Neil raced to the ring with a chair to stop further devastation.

In the co-main event of the evening, Double D defeated Eric Rose.  Double D was still stinging from the outcome of his Triple Threat Match at Violent Valentine when it was revealed that Jordan Jacobs was the Man in the Dark who had been making D’s life a living hell.  Double D took out his frustrations on Eric Rose who jumped in with the Jordan Jacobs, Shawn McHale and Brandon Bishop faction, and the two proceeded to have a terrific match.  Double D and Rose are two of the most physically gifted wrestlers in the game and each man pushed the other to even greater risks and heights in this bout.  The end came when McHale tried to insert himself into the match by holding Double D.  Rose lined up for a superkick, but Double D ducked and the kick landed perfectly on McHale.  Double D took the opportunity to execute a defacer on Rose and got the pinfall victory and inched one step closer to facing Jordan Jacobs in the future.

In the final bout of the night, Nemesis (Rage Logan and Damien Morte) defeated a re-vamped version of the Old School Suckas (Gary Tool and Randy Price) for the IZW Tag Team Titles in a heated bout that left the crowd silent.  This is the second title Logan has picked up in about a month (he lost the Impact Division Title to Jordan Jacobs at Violent Valentine in a Triple Threat Match where he was not even pinned) and also the second time Nemesis has worn championship gold in the tag team division.  It was a brave effort by Tool and Price but the new blood of IZW was too much for the cagey vets to overcome on this night.  It was a back and forth affair until the end. The finish came when Morte spit mist into the face of Tool, temporarily stunning and disorienting him.  Morte then leveraged Tool into a neckbreaker position and Logan came off the top rope landing a perfect body splash onto Tool.  But the neckbreaker/top rope splash wasn’t enough for Nemesis.  They did a double pin on the fallen Tool and got the 1-2-3 victory and became the new IZW Tag Team Champions.  Fans might not like Nemesis’ approach, but you have to give the devils their due.  They are a great tag team and they proved it in this match taking out two great wrestlers in Tool and Price.  Expect a long title run from Nemesis as they look like they are just getting started.

MMA Events LIVE on GFL COMBAT SPORTS NETWORK

- Friday, February 17, 2012 8:30pm ET featuring Ultimate Reno Combat 31 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada. In the main event, Brandon Costa (4-0) representing Uriah Faber’s Ultimate Fitness battles “Bad” Brad Robasciotti (2-1) for the light heavyweight title. Costa is the reigning champion and this will be his first title defense in the 205 lb division. A heavy puncher, the undefeated Costa has 3 of his wins via TKO so he will try and use his hand speed to connect early with Robasciotti. For Robasciotti, he earned this title shot, but a great showing at URC 30 when he TKO’d his opponent in the opening round. This is a great matchup of two heavy hitters and odds are this will not go the distance. Be ready for fireworks. In the co-main event, Oscar Ramirez (7-1) fights Michael Hutchins (2-0) in a bantamweight scrap. For Ramirez this will be his 9th time competing in the URC cage so he will definitely have the advantage with familiarity and experience. A former champion for the promotion, Ramirez is looking to get back to the top and the fastest way to do that is with a spectacular win against Hutchins. Hutchins is a newcomer to MMA, but both of his wins have come via first round submission inside of the URC cage. Hutchins is a great grappler and will not hesitate to go for an arm, leg or neck if he sees an opening. Don’t blink for this bout folks; it’s going to be a barnburner. The winner of this bout will be in line for a title shot soon.

- Saturday, February 18, 2012 4:00am ET / 7:00pm Canberra time, featuring Brace for War 14 at The National Convention Centre, Canberra, Australia. The 9-bout card is headlined by the country’s top MMA talents and this event promises to show the world that mixed martial arts is a thriving and growing sport Down Under. In the main event, Luke Hume fights Dave Brooksbank. This is a battle of Australia versus the UK as Hume will have the home Aussies cheering him on against Brooksbank who is ready to conquer the hometown hero. Hume is coming off a tough loss at Brace for War 13, and looks to get back into title contention with a victory over the up and coming Brooksbank. Hume is able to finish fights on the ground or in the standup and if need be has the conditioning to go the distance. Look for him to try and wear out the less experienced Brooksbank and get him to the later rounds. Brooksbank is a noted grappler as his two victories have both come via first round submissions. Brooksbank will look to do the same against Hume and make it another short night. In the co-main event, Duke Didier battles Hugo Miller in a heavyweight tilt. Didier is an Australian judo champion and will have a huge advantage if the fight goes to the ground. Didier finished his only opponent in under a minute at Brace for War 10, and will try and implement the same game plan here. Miller’s large limbs will be calling cards for submission attempts if Didier can get the bout to the mat. But Miller’s size advantage and reach will pose a huge threat to Didier while the fighters are on their feet. Also scheduled to compete, in a battle of giants, are local favorite Andrew Machin versus Joel Dixon and females Bec “Rowdy” Hyatt against the debuting Sara Morrison.

- Saturday, February 18, 2012 6:30pm ET featuring NAAFS Caged Vengeance 10 at Grays Armory in Cleveland, Ohio. The cards main event will feature former NAAFS welterweight champion Nick Duell who looks for his second straight win against StrikeForce veteran and Team Gracie product, Alex Trevino. Duell is looking for his second straight win after taking home a split decision victory in his last bout back on November 23rd. Trevino, who won his first three fights in StrikeForce, will make his NAAFS debut as he too looks for his second consecutive win. Fan favorite and Ohio native Jessica Eye will battle Jackson MMA’s Kelly Warren in a 125 lbs divisional showcase. Eye was impressive in her last NAAFS appearance when she took out Jennifer Scott by unanimous decision. While Warren looks to rebound off her first career loss, a hard fought loss to current champion Aisling Daly. Long time NAAFS veteran Paul Compton returns to the NAAFS for what could be one of the cards most exciting match ups when he collides with Anotnio Castillo Jr. Both fighters are coming off impressive wins in their last outings. A win in this fight, may earn the victor a crack at the 145 lbs NAAFS title later this year. Former NAAFS national amateur champion Isaiah Chapman will make his long awaited professional debut against newcomer Richard McDole while two time national champion George Comer takes on Ryan Shank to round out the pro portion of the card. The amateur undercard will be highlighted by nationally ranked Cody Garbrandt who may be making his last trip to the cage as an amateur against undefeated up and comer Jarell Hodge.

IZW “Violent Valentine” Review

Violent Valentine, IZW’s first iPPV of 2012 shook up the landscape once again as two new champions were crowned while the shifting dynamics had jaw dropping affects that will be felt for the foreseeable future.  Nothing in IZW will ever be the same again including the two participants in the main event, who defied gravity at times and put their bodies on the line in a TLC Match for the ages.

In the main event, it was Jermaine Johnson once again capturing heavyweight championship gold for the second time as he defeated Aaron “The Real Deal” Neil for the IZW Heavyweight Title in an awesome TLC Match that combined the best of tables, ladders and chairs.  The ending came when both wrestlers climbed the 12 foot ladder, simultaneously, and threw haymakers back and forth at each other until finally Johnson was able to kick Neil off the ladder, sending him through 4 tables and crashing to the concrete ground surrounding the ring!  Johnson hung in the air for several seconds dangling above the ring until finally unclasping the belt from the hook and falling to the mat and becoming the new IZW World Heavyweight Champion!  This TLC Match can stand against ANY TLC Match in history, WWE matches included.  Johnson and Neil sent each other through tables, fell off of ladders, used chairs as a weapon and did it in every corner of the Impact Arena, giving the in-house fans their money’s worth and the fans watching worldwide on GFL.tv.  The brawl started in the ring where Neil was full of fire and got the better of Johnson.  Neil was intent on defending his IZW strap and early on it looked like he would do just that.  But Johnson was able to counter by delivering a drop toe hold onto a chair, sending Neil face first into the cold iron and stopping him dead in his tracks.  Eventually, Neil recovered and stole the momentum back by delivering a spine-buster, sending Johnson through a table that was set up in the corner of the ring.  Later in the match, Johnson delivered a DDT on the side apron and placed Neil on a table outside of the ring.  Johnson then revealed a 15-foot ladder to which he proceeded to climb up all the way to the top and deliver a splash onto Neil’s prone body.  Both men crashed through the table, splintering it like kindling and take years off of both men’s lives.  Somehow both wrestlers recovered and continued their battle onto the IZW stage where Neil sent Johnson flying off the 10 foot stage, crashing through a table, courtesy of a discus punch.  Neil stacked up four tables while Johnson recovered and the two resumed their blood feud in and around the ring until finally both men made their way up the ladder in the center of the ring and Johnson prevailed by sending the massive Neil down to the hard concrete, but not before his body became a human torpedo and shattered 4 tables!  You won’t find a more jaw dropping match in 2012 in professional wrestling than this TLC Match between Jermaine Johnson and Aaron Neil in the IZW ring.

In a match for the Impact Division Title, Rage Logan, Double D and the Man in the Dark where set to square off in a Triple Threat Match.  In the beginning, it was only Logan and Double D, as the Man in the Dark failed to appear.  Logan and Double D put on a wrestling clinic which featured great chain wrestling and cool aerial moves.  Double D set the pace early on by using his athleticism and landing several hard knees to Logan’s face, including a flying knee from the top turnbuckle.  Midway through the bout Logan was able to ground Double D and work him over with some classic scientific mat wrestling.   Double D countered with a Hurricanrana off the top rope but Logan was able to leverage a brain buster minutes later which left both champion and challenger motionless in the ring.  After a bit of outside interference by Damien Morte, Logan was once again able to gain the momentum.  But Double D turned the tables after a flying, spinning, crucifix pinfall attempt and a dive outside of the ring that landed squarely on Logan and Morte.  Both men, broken and exhausted made their way back inside of the ring where Double D went for a sure pinfall, but then the lights went out!  When they came on again the Man in the Dark was revealed to be Jordan Jacobs who was now standing in the ring.  As Double D turned around, Jacobs landed a boot to the face, knocking Double D out cold and pinning him to become the new Impact Division Champion.  It was quite an unexpected revelation as Jacobs up to this point has always been a fan favorite.

To begin the show, Gary Tool along with new partner Randy Price defeated The Future Hall of Famers (Wage and Eric Rose) to retain the IZW Tag Team Championship.  It has been a difficult time for Tool whose longtime partner, Bernie D, is still laid up from a beat down back in 2011.  This match might be a changing of the guard as the duo of Tool and Price never missed a beat against the #1 Challengers in Wage and Rose.  The ending came as Tool and Wage delivered a double cross-body onto each other colliding full force in the middle of the ring.  Tool eventually made the hot tag to Price who cleaned house on both Wage and Rose.  Price tagged Tool back in and together they delivered a double neck-breaker onto Wage, with Tool then getting the pinfall victory and retaining the titles with the help of new partner Randy Price.  After the match, Rose showed his disapproval of Wage’s performance by landing a super-kick to Wage’s jaw.  Rose then followed that up with a chair shot to Wage’s head.

Other matches included Starr (with Bobby Starr) defeating Miss Diss Lexia and Erica in a Triple Threat Match and the giant Kevin Morgan defeating up and comer Chaz Sharpe.

- Friday, February 10, 2012 8:30pm ET featuring Ring of Combat 38 at Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The main event, ROC Light Heavyweight Champion Tom DeBlass (6-0) defends his title against Randy Smith (13-9-1). DeBlass is an undefeated fighter who trains out of the Renzo Gracie Academy and has improved his overall game with every fight. A strong grappler, DeBlass also has put together a top-notch striking game and looks to show a new layer to his MMA game against Smith. For Smith, riding a 2-fight win streak of his own, he comes into the contest with almost four times the experience as the champion and brings a tough ground and pound game. It will be very interesting to see how the fight plays out as many times, two grapplers will turn into boxers or kickboxers and put on a standup fight. Expect both DeBlass and Smith to first try out their wrestling and submission game to test their opponent. The winner of this bout has to be considered the top 205 lb prospect in the Northeast, which puts him on the radar of the UFC, so that combined with a title fight makes this main event a great fight. In the co-main event, for the vacant Featherweight Title, Jeff Lentz (8-3-1) battles Giovanni Moljo (4-4) for king of the 145 lb division. Lentz is a Bellator veteran and is coming off 2 wins and 1 draw in his last 3 fights. For the New Jersey native, Lentz, this is the second time he has had the opportunity to go for ROC gold as he lost via decision on his first attempt. Lentz has finished 6 of his 8 opponents and he is ready finish this fight and not leave it in the hands of the judges so expect him to come out guns blazing from the opening bell. For Moljo this is a great opportunity to win gold and a rare no-lose situation. Lentz was supposed to take on former ROC Champion Deividas Taurosevicus but fate turned in the favor of Moljo who now has a chance to shake up the ROC featherweight division with a victory. In other action, former ROC Welterweight Champion Pete Sell (9-6) is back in action facing Mitch Whitesel (16-20) in a 170 lb scrap. For Sell, this is his first bout since losing the title so it will be interesting to see his game plan for Whitesel. Will he come out aggressive or tentative? Knowing Sell, it will be full speed ahead. For Whitesel, a veteran of Strikeforce, this is an opportunity to add another well-known name to his list of opponents and prove once again, that he is willing to fight anyone in the business at the drop of a hat. For the winner, a title fight is not too far off so this is a big fight for both men.

- Saturday, February 11, 2012 8:00pm ET featuring Spartan Fighting Championship 12 presents Invasion at the Morehead Conference Center in Morehead, Kentucky. In the main event, Billy Poe (7-4) fights Steve Bell (4-3) with Poe’s SFC 185 lb Amateur Title at stake. Poe won the championship last November with a second round TKO win. 5 of 7 wins for Poe have come via stoppage and he will look to make Bell number 6. A strong all around fighter, Poe can finish on his feet or on the ground. This is a dangerous fight for Bell, but the spoils are huge if Bell can defeat the champ. Bell is a top flight grappler who has submitted 75% of his opponents. Look for him to try and get Poe to the ground and finish the fight with a choke. This bout promises to tear down the house as both Poe and Bell are always in attack mode. In the co-main event, for the SFC 145 lb Amateur Title, undefeated Champion Bill Conley (7-0) defends against Blayne Hodges (5-1) in what is sure to be a high octane title fight between two top featherweights. Conley has never been pushed yet in his career. A rangy fighter, who stands 6′0″, Conley poses a tough matchup for fellow featherweights, with his long limbs. His specialty is the triangle choke, so that is something Hodges will have to be ready to defend if it goes to the ground. As luck would have it, Hodges is also an experienced grappler and he two likes to end fights with the triangle choke, finishing his last two opponents by this exact move. For fans of grappling, this has all of the makings for fight of the night as there will be a lot of great action if things hit the mat. Also up for grabs is the SFC 135 lb Amateur Title when Champion Ronnie Jordan (7-2) defends his title against an opponent to be determined. Jordan is a powerhouse in the bantamweight division and executes a strong ground game from the top, landing devastating ground and pound combined with slick submission work. Whoever the opponent is is going to have his hands full in this title bout.

- Saturday, February 11, 2012 8:00pm ET featuring The Big Lot Presents Cummings vs Stafford from the O’Reilly Family Event Center, Springfield, Missouri. At 13-3, Zak Cummings has the UFC in his near plans. However, Oklahoma City’s Lamont ‘KO KID’ Stafford has other plans. Very athletic, Stafford most likely has the advantage everywhere but on the ground. Stafford is bigger (6′5″), stronger, and much more athletic. If this fight stays standing, it could be a long night for the hometown fighter. If Cummings is able to get Stafford on the ground, Zak will most likely prevail. Styles make fights, and this one will be fun to watch. Recently offered a UFC fight, this is likely Whitney’s last fight in Springfield. He’s a joy to work with as when he says ‘I want to fight the best,’ he means it. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find someone to rise to the occasion and fight Andrew. Brandon Wood is an Iraq War Veteran, who’s very tough and durable. Both guys prefer to wrestle, but want to stand up. This one should be a stand-up battle, and fun for all involved. Top fighters from local gyms collide when Shepard (Springfield Fit 2 Fight) and Golden (Team Fusion) meet. Golden earned a reputation as one of the top amateurs around over the last few years, and will have a stiff challenge in his pro debut vs. Shepard. Both guys are elite wrestlers. Even better do they genuinely dislike one another? That often makes for ‘fight of the night.’

The Big Lot presents “Cummings VS Stafford” Live on GFL.tv on February 11

The Big Lot at Reliable Chevrolet in Springfield, Missouri is venturing out into the world of combat sports with its February 11 show Cummings VS Stafford at the O’Reilly Center.  The 9-bout card is a combined show of mixed martial arts and boxing.  The Big Lot has also made a strategic partnership with Internet Pay Per View giant, the GFL Combat Sports Network to broadcast the event worldwide at GFL.tv.

In the main event, Zak Cummings (13-3) representing Springfield, Missouri battles Lamont “KO Kid” Stafford (3-2) from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in what should be a slugfest in the MMA middleweight division.  Cummings is a Strikeforce, Bellator and MFC vet while Stafford also fought for Bellator.  Cummings has won 3 of his last 4 fights and is looking to take the next step in his career.  He has fought for every major promotion in the United States sans the UFC and a spectacular victory against the always tough Stafford might be the fight that makes Zuffa officials take notice and sign the grizzled veteran.  Cummings is able to handle himself in the standup game as well as grappling having numerous victories by way of both.  For Stafford, he is coming in to the fight a relative newcomer compared to Cummings, but his last fight was for an organizational title and he won in under a minute by submission.  Stafford will also be the much bigger fighter in the cage as he stands 6’5”, which is an extremely large frame for a 185 lb fighter.  Still, MMA is a game of chess and there are so many options anything can happen.  Look for Cummings to try and get the bigger Stafford to the mat.  For Stafford, look for him to use his range and land strikes

In the co-main event, Andrew Whitney (6-1) fights Brandon Wood (1-5) in a MMA bantamweight matchup.  Whitney has been avoided like the plague recently as most fighters will not sign on the dotted line to fight the up and coming prospect.  Whitney was recently offered a UFC contract, so this could be his final fight on the regional circuit.  Insert, Brandon Wood, a veteran of the Iraq War and someone who has never turned down a challenge in his entire life.  The matchup is an interesting one as it pits two fighters with similar skill sets.  Both are strong wrestlers, but also welcome the standup game and are willing to put on a show for fans and stand in the middle of the cage and duke it out.

In other action on the MMA side, two Springfield locals square off as Luke Shepard (0-1) faces Devian Golden (0-0).  This is a great fight of two evenly matched opponents who are just starting their professional MMA careers.   The bout has generated quite a buzz in Springfield as these two fighters have had quite a rivalry for some time and will finish it inside the cage on February 11.

In boxing, Jesse Cook (2-0) takes on John Brewer (1-0).  Both fighters are looking to continue their unbeaten streak and for one of them it will happen.  Both are also big punchers as neither fighter has ever gone the distance.  This bout should have a KO of some kind before it goes to the scorecards, so don’t blink.

New In Depth Interview with IZW Superstar Rage Logan

“Greatness is spelled R-A-G-E…”

For Rage Logan, confidence comes easy.  A natural athlete as a youth, Logan played soccer, baseball, basketball and wrestled in high school.  But for a showman like Rage Logan, that was not enough to keep him content.  The squared circle came calling at an early age for the current IZW Impact Division Champion.

“I loved wrestling as a kid; I’ve been a fan since I can remember. Actually, the first action figure I had was Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts. I loved that thing. I followed wrestling all throughout my childhood; I idolized guys like, Sting, Randy Savage, and Chris Jericho.  Don’t ask me to pick a favorite that would be a hard pick. Those guys where who I wanted to be, so when I was 16 I was watching WWE, and during the commercial I saw an ad for a local wrestling school. I freaked out, thinking wow, I never thought in a million years there was a school this close or even wrestling on this level,” Logan remembered.

Even as a teenager, Logan was sure of himself and jumped in feet first, and pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a professional wrestler.

“I started my training at 16 here in Oklahoma. I was trained by “Bad” Brad Michaels and Angel Williams. It’s funny, I remember going through hell and back with those guys, just trying to prove to them and ultimately myself that I belonged in this business. I ended up moving to Arkansas to finish my training, though I learned so much more from Brad and Angel then I ever did in Arkansas. I had my first match at the age of 17, so 2002-2003 I guess would be the ‘official’ time I became pro,” Logan continued.

Since his debut close to 12 years ago, Rage Logan now finds himself holding IZW singles gold for the first time in his career.  ½ of the former Tag Team Champions, Nemesis with Damien Morte, Logan has shined in his new role as a singles wrestler.  Next to the IZW World Heavyweight Championship, the Impact Division Championship is the most prestigious title in the organization and for that matter, the second most prestigious championship in the whole Mid-South territory which covers Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri.

But it hasn’t been an easy road for Logan.  He’s suffered some serious injuries and setbacks throughout his professional career and has had to make sacrifices that meant being away from his family.  “Every day is a challenge whether or not we are in front of a crowd. I have had a fractured vertebrae in my neck, a surgically repaired ankle, numerous dislocations, along with the everyday body aches that come from being a professional wrestler. I’ve spent countless anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, and tons of hours and days on the road, but I wouldn’t trade a second of it,” Logan exclaimed.

When listening to Logan speak, it’s easy to see he has the “it” factor when it comes to drive and determination.  It’s something every successful pro wrestler has.  You need to be able to dedicate yourself 100% to a 365-day-a-year business.  It’s a fact Logan realizes and embraces.  He has his eyes on the prize and that’s what he’s full committed to.

“My goal is to headline WrestleMania. But if the opportunity arose to further my career elsewhere, in Japan or for TNA or ROH, than I would take it in a heartbeat. I’ve actually had a try-out for TNA recently. So, you never know, it may be here sooner than later. But don’t get me wrong, I am loyal to IZW. They have given me the chance to get my name out there, and a place to do what I do best. I respect every person in this company for what they do,” Logan said.

During his tenure with IZW, Logan has managed to excite and incite the Oklahoma crowd on a regular basis.  No matter whom the opponent is, Logan always makes sure to make it unforgettable for the fans.

Logan continued, “Everyone knows I am the Impact Division Champion and that title carries tons of prestige with it.  IZW is the best company I have worked for, hands down the best set-up on the Indy scene. There is so much that goes into just a single show, it’s unbelievable. Not to mention the talent here is top notch, I always love a challenge and these guys and girls bring out the best in me.  By the end of this year I want to be carrying THE gold. I see myself being the heavyweight champion, period.”

Logan along with the rest of the IZW locker room also has a unique opportunity to increase his individual brand and visibility by the fact that IZW can be watched on a worldwide basis now because of the broadcasting capabilities and partnership with Internet Pay Per View juggernaut, GFL.tv (formerly GoFightLive).  Having the exact same PPV platform and model as fellow wrestling federation, Ring of Honor (ROH), shows just how far IZW has come since its inception.  Logan sees that development continuing.

“It’s huge!  GFL.tv is a great place for IZW to get its name out there and show everyone what we are all about.  IZW is growing at a tremendous rate. I mean look at the company two years ago. They have grown tenfold since then. If IZW continues to do what they do now I don’t see any reason why in a matter of a few years we aren’t competing at the TNA level,” Logan stated.

“I wouldn’t say I have had a favorite feud, per say. I think every moment I have in IZW I make memorable. As far as matches go, probably one of my favorites would have to be a year ago at Violent Valentine 2011. It was when I really feel like myself and Damien Morte made our ‘impact’ as they say. Ever since then it’s been a rough rollercoaster of highs and lows. But it’s going great for me right now,” Logan said.

Logan and Morte have had a stellar run in IZW, and are one of the most feared and respected tag teams in the Mid-South territory.  Where ever you can find one, the other is usually not far behind.   Their ability to work as a single unit in and out of the ring has taken years to perfect.  “I met Damien Morte a long time ago, and we have been through a lot since.  We started tagging about four or five years ago at shows here and there.  Very early on we realized we cliqued and decided it was time to tear it down everywhere we went…and the rest is history,” Logan remembered.

“Nemesis is our ‘brand’. It’s more than just a name, it’s our lifestyle.  The name ‘Nemesis’ is actually the name of the Goddess of Retribution & Indignation. And as the description of nemesis states, ‘Nemesis is a personification of the moral reverence for law, of the natural fear of committing a culpable action, and hence of conscience.’ Basically we do what we feel necessary,” Logan recited.

As for what lies ahead for Violent Valentine 2012, one thing is for sure, Rage Logan is supremely confident in his abilities and the outcome of his match.

“At Violent Valentine I will be retaining my title as Double D and this “Man in the Dark” try and fail. Double D is a very talented guy; I won’t take that away from him. But it takes more than being good at gymnastics to beat me. As far as the Man in the Dark is concerned, I have my guesses as to who it is, but whoever it is they aren’t going to be able to turn the lights out long enough to get one over on me. I’m still wondering what they have done to get a shot at my title. Seeing as how Double D has been beat two weeks in a row by Kevin Morgan, and this Mystery Man has yet to show his cowardly face.  But honestly, it won’t matter,” Logan responded.

IZW January 28 Episode on GFL.tv Review

IZW presented another show for free with its ongoing television series on GFL.tv this past Saturday night. All signs point to Violent Valentine on February 11 (which can be ordered here http://www.gfl.tv/Events/Fight/Wrestling/Impact_Zone_Wrestling__Violent_Valentine/1348) but there is still some serious business that needs to be taken care of and sorted out in the next two weeks leading up to the iPPV.

To open the show, Brandon Bishop was summarily dissed by Double D in a backstage encounter when D decided not to align with the new IZW Commissioner. Bishop then went on the offensive and threated Double D with another confrontation by the Mystery Man which would be forthcoming.

In the opening match, Double D versus Kevin Morgan was ruled a no contest after once again the Mystery Man interfered in Double D’s match. This time when the lights turned back on, Double D was handcuffed to the top rope. The referee called for the bell, but Morgan was not dissuaded as he kicked Double D square in the face, knocking the former Impact Division Champion out cold. This makes three weeks in a row where Double D has been tormented by the man in the dark. Although you can’t blame the man in the dark as he has been able to secure an Impact Division Title Match for his underhanded tactics against the two-time Superstar of the Year in Double D.

Brandon Bishop then tried to convince Jermaine Johnson that it was good for his career to continue to tag team with Aaron Neil. Johnson didn’t agree, but nevertheless a match was set for later in the night for Johnson and Neil versus The Future Hall of Famers where something of value would be at stake.

Erica and Miss Diss Lexia came out to the ring to speak to the fans when Starr and Bobby Star interrupted. Starr informed the two that they would square off against each other later in the evening and Starr would be the special referee. It was a twist that Erica and Miss Diss Lexia were not expecting.

Rage Logan, with Damien Morte, gave a backstage promo that showed the new champ is ready to take things to the next level in 2012. Wearing the gold has certainly raised Logan’s confidence as you could see the determination in his eyes when he talked about his reign, both present and future, as the IZW Impact Division Champion. He would get that chance to prove himself once again later in the night as he was scheduled for the main event against Randy Price.

Next up was one half of the IZW Tag Team Champions, Gary Tool versus Soto Myagi. Tool’s tag team partner, Bernie D is still sidelined from an injury in 2011, so Tool was in a rare singles match. Myagi had his moments, but Tool proved to have too much experience and ring time as the cagey veteran defeated the man from the Orient with a devastating power slam.

Jermaine Johnson and Aaron Neil teamed up to take on The Future Hall of Famers with a #1 tag team Contenders’ Match on the line to take place at Violent Valentine. The most unique site was when Wage and Neil locked up like two Brahma bulls. Both men are physical specimens and you could see the impact with which they slammed into each other and the after effects of the damage as both men took something out one another. The pinnacle moment of the match came when Jermaine Johnson held the monster Wage up for several seconds in a vertical suplex and then dumped him to the mat. Johnson then launched Rose off the top rope with another variation of a suplex sending Rose flying across the ring. For good measure, Johnson did a nip up to his feet showing just how athletically gifted he is. Johnson then followed all of that up with a Real Drill on Wage. Neil took offense and he and Johnson got into a shouting match which let Eric Rose recover and land a perfectly placed spinning kick on Johnson’s jaw setting up the pinfall for the Future Hall of Famers. The post-match saw a wild brawl between Johnson and Neil that had them fighting all over the arena.

After Johnson and Neil fought their way to the back area, Eric Rose and Wage re-entered the ring as the new #1 contenders’ for the tag belts. Gary Tool came to the ring and a heated exchange ensued as there was a two on one beat down on Tool by Rose and Wage. Randy Price came from backstage wielding a chair to make the save for Tool and chased the Future Hall of Famers out of the ring. Because of the save, Tool accepted Price’s request to help him defend the tag titles at Violent Valentine on February 11 against the FHF.

In the oddest match of the evening, tag team partners, Erica and Miss Diss Lexia wrestled each other. The two women gave it their all and competed 100% against one another, but with Starr as the referee, something peculiar was bound to happen. Starr annoyed both Erica and Miss Diss Lexia throughout the bout until both women had enough and pushed Starr to the mat, where they were both then promptly disqualified. Erica and Miss Diss Lexia showed that they are two of the best female wrestlers in the greater Oklahoma territory as before the bout ended, they put on an action packed wrestling match.

In the final bout of the night, Randy Price defeated Impact Division Champion Rage Logan by disqualification. It was a great match between the two, and Price was even able to withstand Damien Morte’s interference. The end came when Price had Logan in his clutches ready to give him the Piledriver 1-2-3 which would have ended Logan’s reign as champion. But before Price could execute the move, Wage and Eric Rose came to the ring to settle the score from earlier in the night when Price went after them with a steel chair. They were able to double team Price and that made the referee call for the bell, giving Price the victory but not the title. This will no doubt add more fuel to the fire for Violent Valentine when Price and Tool battle Wage and Rose with championship gold on the line.

Not to be outdone, Aaron Neil and Jermaine Johnson made another appearance in the Impact Zone. They had still been fighting from earlier in the night and continued their slobber knocker in front of the fans. The fans for their part new they were seeing something amazing as they shouted “this is awesome” with every punch Neil and Johnson threw. The action finally ended up back in the ring, where Johnson countered the Real Drill with a facebuster that knocked Neil out. Johnson then got a ladder from the outside, but it was the wrong move to make as Neil grabbed Johnson and gave him the Real Drill on top of the ladder sending Johnson’s body crashing against the unforgiving hard steel. This impromptu scuffle at the end of the evening was a precursor to what fans can expect on February 11 at Violent Valentine, when Aaron Neil defends his IZW Heavyweight Championship against Jermaine Johnson in a TLC Match.

1/26/11 (Morgantown, WV): With this Saturdays Caged Fury 16 officially selling out earlier this week, the NAAFS in conjunction with Simon’s Promotions and Go Fight Live have announced that Caged Fury 16 will be streamed live for $14.99. The main event will showcase 3-time UFC veteran Sean “Big Sexy” McCorkle (13-2) as he collides with undefeated slugger Mike Gordon (4-0) in a super heavyweight battle. “The Big Sexy” comes in riding a three fight win streak as he makes his NAAFS debut against a tough young prospect in Gordon. Gordon is 4-0 as a professional and has finished each of his four opponents in the first round. A win over McCorkle will no doubt put Gordon on the map nationally and could earn him a crack at the coveted NAAFS pro series HW title.

NAAFS Caged Fury 16 will mark one of the state’s first ever sanctioned events which will also feature some of the sport’s top young professional fighters as part of this taped for television fight card. Included will be a history making bout between Ashley Cummins and Stephanie Frausto who’ll become the first females to ever compete in a sanctioned MMA bout in the state of West Virginia. Cummins is widely considered one of the WMMA’s top young prospects with an overall MMA record of 7-0. Frausto (1-2 pro), a Bellator vet and the younger sister of current Bellator world champion Zoila Frausto, hopes that a win over Cummins will catapult her in to the WMMA rankings at 115 lbs.

Bellator veteran Joey “The Hitman” Holt (9-5) returns to the NAAFS after a highlight reel KO over previously undefeated Clint Musser at Bellator 51. Holt faces NAAFS newcomer Nate Hall (6-4) who will look to make a name for himself with a won over a highly touted Holt.

Former NAAFS pro series welterweight contender Mickey Hughes (8-7) will face Bellator vet Brandon Sailing (15-8) at 185 lbs. Hughes has been in the NAAFS cage against the likes of Chris Lozano, Travis Clark, Nick Duell and owns a win over UFC vet Justin Edwards early in his career. Brandon Sailing comes in a winner of three of his last four bouts, with his only defeat in that span coming at Bellator 59.

NAAFS light heavyweight contender Josh Stansbury (12-4) will look for his third straight win when he faces John Opfar (10-4) in an NAAFS contender’s bout. The winner will likely face current champion Dan Spohn for the 205 lbs NAAFS title later in the year.

Fighter Weigh-ins and Press Conference Open to the Public

The Caged Fury 16 fighter weigh-ins, set for tomorrow night (1/27) at 7pm, will be open to the public and media followed by a brief press conference and Q & A session with various fighters scheduled to compete. Both the weigh-ins and press conference will take place a Keglers Sports bar located at 735-A Chestnut Ridge Road – Morgantown, WV 26505.
