GFL PRESENTS “JASON SOSA VS BERGMAN AGUILAR” BEGINNING MARCH 30

March 27, 2015

GFL, The Comcast Network and Comcast SportsNet continue their weekly combat sports series, REAL FIGHTS, with world class boxing from Philadelphia as Peltz Boxing and Joe Hand Promotions presents another showstopper!

Jason Sosa of Camden, NJ, riding an eight-fight knockout streak, returns to action when he boxes Bergman Aguilar of Escazu, Costa Rica, in an eight-round junior lightweight fight at the 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia.

The Sosa-Bergman contest, along with an eight-round heavyweight match featuring Joey Dawejko of Philadelphia, headlines a seven-fight card.

Sosa, 26, who knocked out Juan Cruz in his last fight Oct. 18 in Catano, Puerto Rico, is 13-1-3 with 9 K0s. He has been a pro since 2009.
Earlier in 2014, Sosa scored his biggest win when he knocked out Michael Brooks of Long Island, NY, in the ninth round at Bally’s Atlantic City.

Sosa is ranked No. 2 in the United States at 130 pounds by the USBA and No. 31 in the world by the WBC.

“I’m excited to be back fighting in Philadelphia in front of my fans, family and friends who will be crossing the bridge from my hometown of Camden,” said Sosa. “I expect 2015 to be a great year, and I will continue where I left off with my explosive knockouts. I want to thank my manager, Mark Cipparone, of Club 1957 Management, and the entire Rocco’s Collision Team for believing in me and making a lot of things possible. I would like to thank Russell Peltz as well. El Canito is back!”

Sosa has not boxed in Philadelphia since Dec. 8, 2012, when he knocked out Isaac Suarez of Lancaster, PA, in two rounds at Temple University’s McGonigle Hall.

Aguilar, 30, now living in Puerto Rico, is 12-1-1 with 4 K0s. In his last fight April 24 in Panama, Aguilar scored an 11-round decision over previously unbeaten hometown hero Juan Huertas for the interim WBA Fedelatin Title.

A pro since 2008, Aguilar will be making his first start outside Central America.

“I ask for all Costa Rican fans to come out and support me in Philadelphia,” said Aguilar.

Heavyweight prospect Joey Dawejko, who has scored three straight one-round knockouts, takes on Enobong Umohette, of Nigeria, in an eight-round fight.

Dawejko, 24, had a big year in 2014, going 5-0 and beating fringe contender Derric Rossy, of New York, to break onto the heavyweight scene 12 months ago.

A pro since 2009, Dawejko, also known as The Tank, is 13-3-2, 6 K0s. In his last three fights, neither David Williams, of Philadelphia, Yohan Banks, of Redwood City, CA, nor Rayford Johnson, of Longview, TX, were able to survive the first round. Dawejko also defeated then-unbeaten Philadelphia Mark Rideout in 2014.

“This could be the start of a big year for me,” Dawejko said, “so I’m not taking any chances. I’m going away to the mountains to train for this fight. Umohette is a big, strong guy and I need to be prepared. Last year was a rebuilding year for me and I hope to get into the world rankings in 2015.

“I saw Umohette fight on video and I listened to his story. This is a big fight for him, also.”

Umohette (left), 35, now living in Milwaukee, WI, started boxing in 1998. Known as The Nigerian Gentleman, he won his country’s National Amateur Championship in 2005 in the super heavyweight division.

After relocating to Wisconsin, he won that state’s Novice Heavyweight Title in 2007.

Umohette turned pro in 2009 and promptly lost his first fight before going on a nine-fight winning streak which included winning the Wisconsin State Heavyweight Title.

“It will be an honor and a privilege to compete against the highly decorated former World Amateur Champion, Joey Dawejko, in his home state of Pennsylvania, which has a legendary boxing history,” Umohette said. “Dawejko’s very distinguished amateur career and his blazing pro career is testimony to his enormous talent. I look forward to an entertaining bout against The Tank.”

GFL REAL FIGHTS – Broadway Boxing: Hardy VS Anderson on TCN, CSN, DISH, DirecTV, FiOS, U-verse

GFL PRESENTS “REAL FIGHTS” ON THE COMCAST NETWORK (TCN), COMCAST SPORTSNET (CSN), DISH, DIRECTV, AT&T U-VERSE AND VERIZON FIOS
GFL PRESENTS “BROADWAY BOXING: HARDY VS ANDERSON” BEGINNING MARCH 23

March 20, 2015

GFL, The Comcast Network and Comcast SportsNet continue their weekly combat sports series, REAL FIGHTS, with world class boxing from NYC as Dibella Entertainment presents another episode of its long running series, Broadway Boxing.

NEW YORK, NY – It was decided that popular female boxer Heather “The Heat” Hardy, 11-0 (2 KOs), will be added to the next installment of DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing series. The card will take place at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill, in Times Square, New York City. The thrilling six-bout card is headlined by the always-exciting Heather “The Heat” Hardy, known as the “First Lady of DBE” and often referred to as “a female Arturo Gatti”. The card will also feature three up-and-coming prospects and former amateur stars hailing from the former Eastern Bloc, in Ivan Golub, Ivan Baranchyk and Dauren Yeleussinov, all of whom are now living and training in Brooklyn, NY, and co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Fight Promotions Inc.

Following her WBC International super bantamweight title victory on October 15 and the premiere of a documentary based on her boxing career, titled “HARDY”, that was executive produced by Lou DiBella, the popular Hardy, from Brooklyn, NY, will step into the ring for the fifth time this year when she squares off against Salt Lake City’s Elizabeth Anderson, 3-5, in an eight-round junior featherweight contest. In her last bout, Hardy, 11-0 (2 KOs), expertly outboxed her opponent over 10 frames, throwing in combination, counterpunching and showing adept footwork, in what was her most impressive performance to date.

DBE-promoted New York Golden Gloves champion Louis Cruz, 9-0 (4 KOs), will see action in a six-round junior welterweight contest. Following a second-place finish at the 2011 National Golden Gloves, the 23-year-old Cruz competed in the 2012 US Olympic Trials before turning pro later that same year. The Bronx-native has already picked up four victories this year and will be determined to stay on course. Facing off against Cruz will be Rogelio Casarez, 7-2 (3 KOs), of Batesville, AR.

The 25-year-old Ukrainian Ivan Golub amassed an astonishing record of 270-32 during his amateur career. He became a five-time Ukrainian National champion, won bronze medals at the Junior World Championships in 2006 and at the World Championships in 2009. He also participated in the World Series of Boxing, winning all five of his bouts. Turning pro this past June, Golub, now 3-0 (2 KOs), is anxious to keep up the career momentum and will compete in a six-round middleweight contest against Josh Williams, 9-6 (5 KOs), of Sheridan, AR.
Also on the undercard is a rematch between undefeated DiBella Entertainment-promoted middleweight prospect Paul Littleton, 9-0-2 (5 KOs), and Lamar Harris, 8-10-4 (4 KOs), in a six-round contest. The two engaged in a captivating battle that ended in a disputed draw, on September 13, in Saint Charles, MO, near Harris’ hometown of St. Louis. The 28-year-old Littleton is a crowd pleaser with an aggressive style, originally from Chicago and now living in Miami, FL. After winning the Chicago Golden Gloves three times while accruing an amateur record of 85-20, Littleton turned pro in December 2011. He has since beaten three undefeated prospects, including the 7-0 Roberto Acevedo. In June 2014, Littleton signed an exclusive promotional agreement with DiBella Entertainment and the rematch against Harris will be his third under the DBE banner.

Belarusian-native junior welterweight Ivan Baranchyk, 1-0 (1 KO), will return to the ring less than three weeks after his professional debut on November 13. Facing Christopher Haney at the Baltimore Arena, in Baltimore, MD, Baranchyk quickly dropped his foe with a straight right then sent him to the canvas for the second and final time with a left hook just 45 seconds into the bout. Looking for his second straight victory, Baranchyk will take on Alfonso Olvera, 1-0 (1 KO), of Tucson, AZ. As an amateur, Baranchyk won gold at the 2010 Class A Vilnuse tournament, 2011 and 2013 Match Event tournament, 2011 Kostukovichi International tournament, 2011 and 2012 Soligorsk Open International tournament, 2012 Class A Liventsev tournament, 2013 Active Military tournament, 2013 Republic of Belarus Open Cup, 2014 Vitebsk University tournament in Belarus, and was an amateur champion of Belarus from 2009-2014.

Very anxious to turn pro is Kazakhstan’s 28-year-old Dauren Yeleussinov. This hard-punching southpaw had an extensive amateur career that saw him compile a 397-23 record, with more than 100 knockouts. He is a four-time National champion for Kazakhstan and has won gold twice at the Universiade Championships as well as at the National Junior Championships. On Wednesday, he will challenge Biloxi, Mississippi’s Anthony Madden, 1-5-1 (1 KO).

GFL REAL FIGHTS Presents Strike Off FC 4 on TCN, CSN Comcast, DISH, DirecTV, U-Verse & FiOS

GFL PRESENTS “REAL FIGHTS” ON THE COMCAST NETWORK (TCN), COMCAST SPORTSNET (CSN), DISH, DIRECTV, AT&T U-VERSE AND VERIZON FIOS
GFL PRESENTS “STRIKE OFF FC 4” BEGINNING MARCH 16

March 13, 2015

GFL, The Comcast Network and Comcast SportsNet continue their weekly combat sports series, REAL FIGHTS, with world class MMA as Strike Off FC presents another show stopper with Strike Off FC 4 featuring a full lineup of world class MMA from NOVA College in Annandale, Virginia. Strike Off FC has quickly established itself as a rising combat sports promotion in the Mid-Atlantic region.
In the main event, Billy Quarantillo (5-1) battles Khama Worthy (7-2) for the Strike Off FC Featherweight Championship. Quarantillo is a grappling specialist earning 4 wins via tapout. Quarantillo is an aggressive fighter who likes to push the pace and go for the finish early and often. Don’t be surprised if he goes for a takedown in the opening minute and tries to work his submission game on the ground. Quarantillo values submission over position and has a very active top game as well as guard and is just as dangerous off of his back as he is when he is working from side control or has the mount. Worthy is riding a 6-fight winning streak and has racked up 5 wins via TKO. Worthy brings KO power into the cage with both hands and can end a fight with a single punch. Look for Worthy to try and keep this fight standing as he can do substantially more damage in the striking aspect of MMA. This will be a contrast of styles and the winner will be able to impose his will on where he wants the fight to go.

In the co-main event, Elder Ramos (8-6) fights Bellator vet Derrick Kennington (7-6) for the Strike Off FC Welterweight Title. Ramos looks to add another title to his collection and has won 3 out of his last 4, to go along with 4 first round KOs on his record. He is the very definition of a quick starter. Look for Ramos to push the pace and immediately close the distance in the cage with his strikes. If the fight goes to the mat, expect Ramos to be active looking to scramble and improve his position whenever he can as he is also devastating on the ground. Kennington is a well-rounded fighter and his standup, particularly his Muay Thai, is punishing to his opponents. Kennington mixes up knees, kicks and punches very well to keep his opponent off balance. But it is his grappling that is most dangerous as he has scored submission victories in 5 of his wins.

The promotion’s third inaugural belt will be on the line as the Strike Off FC Flyweight Championship is at stake when the #1 ranked Flyweight in the region, Samir Farid, will be facing North Carolina’s Varon Webb. Still undefeated in his young career, Farid, 4-0, is coming off a spectacular come-from-behind win over Dennis Brown at Strike Off 2. Webb, 5-2, has fought in two previous title fights with NFC in Georgia, but just as Farid, has never made it into the championship rounds.

GFL, The Comcast Network and Comcast SportsNet continue their weekly combat sports series, REAL FIGHTS, with world class MMA as Global Proving Ground presents another show stopper with GPG 18 featuring a full lineup of world class MMA from the GPG Event Center in Pennsauken, New Jersey.GPG has quickly established itself as a rising combat sports promotion on the East Coast and this event further cemented their credibility within the region.

In the main event, Brandon Wheeler battles Anthony Dill. Both of these fighters have their backs against the wall and are looking to climb up the ladder in GPG. A victory here will do that for one of them. Wheeler is an aggressive fighter who always pushes the pace and tries to get his opponent to make a tactical mistake. Wheeler has a very underrated submission game and might look to get this fight to the ground early. If Dill stumbles, will Wheeler be in the right place to finish the fight? Dill is a great standup fighter and loves to throw combos from a variety of angles. Dill will look to keep the fight standing and finish Wheeler off with a KO.
In the co-main event, Peter Petties fights Brandon Pennington. Both Petties and Pennington are very young in the sport and are matched up in a battle of two highly touted prospects. Petties has great counter punching, while Pennington is known for throwing hard leg kicks. This should be a nice standup battle as both men are looking for a highlight reel knockout.

GFL PRESENTS “TEAM FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP 3” BEGINNING MARCH 2

February 27, 2015

GFL, The Comcast Network and Comcast SportsNet continue their weekly combat sports series, REAL FIGHTS, with world class MMA as TFC presents another show stopper with Team Fighting Championship 3 featuring a full lineup of countries competing in 5 on 5 team MMA in one giant ring. The reality of fighting changed forever in 1993 with the inaugural UFC event. TFC showed that in a team setting, many times with uneven odds, many of the styles and techniques that work well in traditional MMA are not effective and can actually put you at a disadvantage.

Teams scheduled to compete are from Poland, Russian, Brazil, UK, USA and Latvia. The early favorites are, returning champions Poland, and the USA and Latvia who have challenged for the title in previous events, with Russia being the wildcard and having the fire power to pull off the victory. If you haven’t witnessed team fighting MMA, you are in for a treat. Nothing can prepare you for this sport and spectacle.

James Jefferson was tentative the first time he saw Team Fighting Championship. It was kind of like MMA, except there were 10 men in a ring and they were all fighting each other at once.

“I cringed,” Jefferson told MMAFighting.com. “Until I really experienced it, watched all the film, watched how they ran it, I was hesitant.”

“It’s a group fight,” Jefferson said. “It’s a gang fight. It’s more or less a barroom brawl without the bottles.”

TFC adheres to the unified rules of mixed martial arts for the most part. But it is done elimination style. When a fighter taps or gets knocked out, he is out and his team is down a man. That can lead to 2-on-1 or 3-on-1 — or worse — situations. There are instances where an athlete can get caught in a chokehold and kicked in the face at the same time.

A five-man team cannot exceed a combined weight of 500 kilograms (or just over 1,102 pounds). That’s an average of about 220 pounds per fighter. The format is round-robin tournament-based, so teams will be competing multiple times in one day.

TFC is illegal in the United States and most other countries with sanctioning bodies.

Is this too violent? Jefferson acknowledges “there is a greater danger level” than typical MMA. But he also doesn’t think something like this should be banned.

“You could get injured in a car accident,” he said. “These are professional athletes. They’re trained, they’re skilled.”
Team Fighting Championship is held in a 30,000 square-foot arena that is completely empty. The display is meant for television viewers only. The fight takes place in a 40 by 40 ring with five referees.

With a combined record of 19-2, this fight will also claim the current title of top lightweight prospect in the world as the last three CFFC lightweight champions, John Cholish, Charlie Brenneman and Paul Felder, have gone to the UFC.

Winning nine out of his first ten pro fights, Stiner heads into this contest with a lot of confidence. He is currently undefeated at lightweight and his only loss was a decision at 145-pounds to the current CFFC featherweight champion, Levan Makashvilli. After that loss, the Canton, Pennsylvania native has won three straight including a knockout victory over Mike Medrano. “My time is now to take the CFFC title,” stated Stiner. “Since moving up to lightweight, I feel like no one is going to be able to stop me from being champion. I was born to fight, this is my destiny. Horcher will be my toughest fight to date and I have nothing but respect for him as a fighter. I feel like we have been on a crash course to fight each other for some time now. We are the top two lightweights in the region and only one of us is going to be crowned. That being said, no one will stand in my way of taking the belt home. No one will want to miss this one, there will most definitely be fireworks!”

After shooting out of the gate with six stoppages in his first six fights, Horcher is putting together a more complete package as a fighter. Once known for just his knockouts, Horcher is showing other aspects of his game which includes wrestling and jiu-jitsu. Horcher has gone 3-0 since signing with CFFC and has his sights set out on CFFC gold since his promotional debut. “I want to thank CFFC for giving me an opportunity to fight for their lightweight title and to showcase my skills,” said Horcher. “Jordan Stiner is a very well rounded opponent. He’s won fights by both knockout and submission. I am excited to compete against Jordan, I think we will bring the best out in each other and put on a great fight for the fans. I approach every fight with the same game plan, to finish. That is my goal, impose my will on my opponent and fight for the finish. Fans won’t want to miss this fight, I’ve been traveling to train with some of the best in the world and I’m ready to show my skills and become CFFC Lightweight Champion.”

GFL PRESENTS “GLOBAL PROVING GROUND 17” BEGINNING FEBRUARY 2

January 29, 2015

GFL, The Comcast Network and Comcast SportsNet continue their weekly combat sports series, REAL FIGHTS, with world class MMA as Global Proving Ground presents another show stopper with Global Proving Ground 17, featuring a full lineup of extreme cage fights emanating from the GPG Event Center in Pennsauken, New Jersey.

In the main event, Sam Oropeza (12-2) will meet Timonthy Woods (8-4) in a middleweight bout that has created quite a buzz in the MMA world as Oropeza is coming off a successful stint in Bellator where he reeled off 4 wins in a row with the top rated organization.
Philadelphia native, Oropeza, recently made a move to the middleweight division after missing the 170 lbs. mark at Bellator 118 on May 1, 2014. Oropeza lost his opportunity to fight Andrey Koreshkov in the Bellator welterweight tournament final.

Oropeza returned to the cage in October where he defeated fellow middleweight, Gary Tapusoa, via first round technical knockout. Oropeza is currently riding a seven fight win streak, last defeated by Giedrius Karavackas via scarf hold arm-lock in 2011.
Oropeza will be fighting outside of the Bellator cage for the first time in three fights when he faces Woods in the GPG main event.
Like Oropeza, Woods recently fought under the Bellator banner. At Bellator 118 he defeated Eugene Fadiora via unanimous decision.
Wood’s victory put him back into the win column after losing a three round split decision to Mike Stewart at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 22. Woods has been unable to collect two consecutive wins since defeating Ronald Stallings via knockout in April 2008.
Woods currently fights of Temple Hills, Maryland.

Both fighters has proven to favor the striking game. Half of Oropeza’s victory come from TKO/KO. Woods is the owner of four TKO/KO victories.

GFL PRESENTS “REAL FIGHTS” ON THE COMCAST NETWORK (TCN) & COMCAST SPORTSNET (CSN)
GFL PRESENTS “BAMMA USA: BADBEAT 14” BEGINNING JANUARY 26

January 23, 2015

GFL, The Comcast Network and Comcast SportsNet continue their weekly combat sports series, REAL FIGHTS, with world class MMA as BAMMA USA presents another show stopper with Badbeat 14, featuring a full lineup of extreme cage fights emanating from the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California.

In the main event, Greg Parker (4-0) battles Andrew Ramm (2-0) in a welterweight clash. Parker is undefeated and has won all of his fights inside of two rounds. Parker is a strong wrestler with a solid grappling game, having defeated 3 of his 4 opponents via tapout. Look for Parker to use his strength and size to try and out muscle Ramm in the clinch and on the mat. Ramm has had a successful amateur and pro career and is also a decorated grappler earning tapout wins in a majority of his pro/am fights. Ramm is very confident on the ground and goes for submission after submission, continually setting up his next move. If the fight hits the mat, it will be a chess match between the power of Parker and the elusiveness of Ramm.

In the co-main event, Mike Jasper (7-2) battles Justin Vazquez (4-6). Jasper is a quick starter having 6 of his 7 wins come before the final bell. Jasper’s only 2 losses have come via decision. Look for Jasper to come out aggressive with his striking and takedowns. Vazquez is taking the fight on short notice and has nothing to lose in this fight. Vazquez is a gritty, durable fighter who is looking to pull the upset. Vazquez will need to let his hands go and meet the intensity of Jasper.
